Had a wonderful date night at the White Horse Tavern. The cocktails were perfect, wine list excellent, and dinner perfectly cooked. We had Beef Wellington and Diver Scallops, both wonderful. The history and ambience of this place alone make it worth the visit.

Everything about the White Horse Tavern is lovely. My friends were delighted. I enjoy the feeling of time and history in each room. The food offerings are good, though I think the beet and goat cheese appetizer needed a tiny bit more dressing and moisture. The scotch egg was excellent. However, the size of my swordfish portion was disappointing. Everything seemed a little dry. We had to pay extra to get a small extra portion of gravy for the $52 Beef Wellington. Not sure that was fair. Nevertheless, the Statler chicken was very good. The creme brulee was perfect. Lighting is always important. The wall sconces seemed to all be loaded with super bright LED bulbs. Whichever way I turned, I was slightly blinded. It's probably for health and safety, but I would have loved softer lighting. I'll wager the rooms feel just right lit only by the fireplaces! All in all, dinner last Friday was memorable.

My wife and I have small appetites. We ordered the swordfish and requested they split it onto two plates. They refused. It would have been such a simple matter to put a small amount of mashed potatoes on each plate a couple of asparagus and about half of the swordfish. Instead it was served with the fish on top of the mush mashed potatoes and was difficult to cut without depressing into the potatoes and making a mess of things. I was able to do but it was messy. You would think paying $39 for a meal , it could be served in 2 separate portions. Even the fast food restaurants, which we do not use, will make it “your way”. Small point but irritating.
