Vespaio Restaurant is one of the original South Congress eateries and remains one of Austin's favorite Italian go-to's among locals and visitors. This casual dinner venue is a popular choice for date nights or evenings out with friends, seating every day at 5pm. The interior of Vespaio Restaurant is decorated with ceiling tiles, ceiling plans, vintage pendant lighting, classic table seating, a plethora of wine racks and vibrant accent walls.In addition to a full bar menu, Vespaio Restaurant offers a lengthy selection of mouth-watering and flavorful authentic Italian dishes. Menu items include carpaccio, mixed seafood stew, lasagna, mussels, calamari, spaghetti carbonara, chocolate hazelnut cake, panna cotta and green pasta with shrimp.     We arrived early (as soon as the restaurant opened) for a 5:15 reservation and were seated right away. The service was good. There was a small wait while the food came out, but everything was delicious, hot, fresh and perfectly cooked. My only advice is don't read the menu outside the door, because it may not be up to date. I had my heart set on a dish described on the menu posted outside of the restaurant and it wasn't on the menu we recieved when we were seated. Extensive wine list and good food. The restaurant is lively without being overly noisy. This is a great special occasion place.

    3 of us ate dinner, 2 were gluten free and loved their dishes. I ordered the cache de Pepe which I have had before and loved. All 3 of us ordered the 1/2 size portion but while the gluten free small bowls were filled, my smallish bowl was only 1/3 filled with pasta. It barely took me 5 bites to eat it all and while tasty…this seemed liked a kids portion and not worth $35 bucks at all. The waiter said because it did not have veggies or meat in It like my friends it was not as full. But it was a very tiny portion.

    The Beet Carpaccio salad was awesome, everything else was mediocre. The Bolognese was particularly disappointing - fairly tasteless ground meat with a few mediocre wide pasta noodles thrown in. No one offered any grated parmesan to go on any of the dishes, which would have been nice. There was a risotto special that several people got - quite runny on the plate and not very flavorful at all. I was so bummed - this restaurant had been recommended by several people, but that was a couple years ago. Perhaps chefs have changed...

    We enjoyed our time at Vespaio's as we were celebrating a birthday. However, our martini's we ordered were inconsistently made and my pappardelle pasta which is normally my favorite didn't have enough flavor and tasted a little bland. The rest of our party's food was mediocre. I was disappointed in their quality of food.
