Wonderful, indulgent experience. Great for a special occasion for someone who really adores Japanese food, and in particular sashimi and sushi. While there were a few dishes that did not contain raw fish, that was the focus. The food was exceptional - some unusual combinations, and all of it incredibly fresh, and artfully-presented. By sitting at a table we probably learned less about the food and could not watch the chefs in action - but this was better for our group of four to be able to talk. I think there are pros and cons to both experiences. We were glad that we were able to spend a bit longer at our table than we were initially told to expect. Indeed, if the table were only ours for an hour and a half, that would have felt very rushed. There was a 5:30 pm seating and an 8 pm seating, so understandably we needed to be out before 8 pm - but we were seated and enjoyed eating, drinking and conversation for over two hours.

When all 12 guests dishes are prepared at the same time, it slows down the dinner process compared to an individual omakase. The nigiri courses were mostly traditional, I would have liked to have seen bolder or more interesting flavors. Was not a particular fan of the fruit garnishes on the nigiri and sashimi. I did enjoy the somen course, and seeing the whole fish presentations. It would be nice to have some nama sake available by the glass.

Food was quite good, but about at the level I would expect for an Omakase at this price point. Service was also knowledgable and friendly. For me the fly in the ointment was the 6% "kitchen fee", which they emphasized was not a gratuity. This is supposedly for the chefs, but what is the $168 for the menu supposed to cover ? The raw ingredients ? In fairness they disclosed this at the time of booking, but its still creates a negative friction for the diner, when you just want to relax and enjoy the food. If you want to charge more, just be up front and add it to the menu price. Don't advertise a price $X with an asterisk added fee in the fine print.

I think the overall experience would have been different and better had we been seated at the bar.
