For generations of San Diegans, the “Seahorse” symbol of The Marine Room has long stood for its dramatic on-the-surf location and California coastal cuisine. Considering this rare blend of culinary excellence, uncompromising service and beachfront setting, it’s no wonder The Marine Room has become a true San Diego landmark. We invite you to San Diego's iconic dining destination and experience how each tide brings something new to The Marine Room. You’re not reserving a table – you’re joining a 80-year tradition.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Michael Vaughn

From the OpenTable editors: This is an iconic La Jolla gem. What was French fine-dining is now a standout sustainable seafood spot serving local bluefin tuna with edamame and pickled ginger. The dining room is still the place to go for a killer oceanfront view—especially during high tide, when waves crash against the windows.

Went for a special birthday - Hector our waiter was lovely. Seating was by the window as requested. The restaurant had a special Birthday Menu congratulating the birthday celebrant. Service was relaxed but attentive. lovely wine service with a special old dessert wine. We had shared appetizers, and scallops , cod, and trout. All nicely prepared and presented.

Absolutely amazing! Even without the waves on the window. Which, how can the restaurant control that?! So delicious and elegant. 10/10. Hector was our waiter and he was the absolute best! You can tell the staff works together to provide the best experience for the customers. A highly recommended restaurant.

The restaurant is beautiful and the food delicious. However the welcoming and hostess situation left a lot to be desired. It didn’t feel special as No warm greeting upon arrival and awkward waiting period and area. The staff is a bit too stiff and made it feel uncomfortable.

Second time with have been to this establishment. Probably wouldn’t be a third if not for the great service Marissa gave us along with the young lady who was bussing tables like a champion. The food was meh at best. My wife and I were there for an anniversary dinner. Our reservation was set for 5 pm. Didn’t get seated until 5:10. Was greeted by Marissa who did a wonderful job. We ordered two n/a drinks and an appetizer. The appetizer was a roasted poblano risotto. The flavor was good but very under cooked. We were also served an amuse bouche. We let the staff know we do not eat meat and the current selection was escargot. They sent us out a corn mixture which wasn’t bad, but it was corn. So nothing special there. We ordered our entrees which consisted of my wife ordering the lobster tail and mash potato puree. The mash potato purée was extremely bland, cold and just all around was not good. The lobster tail was over salted. The sauce they sent out with it was good and kind of saved the day for the lobster. I ordered the scallops with a lobster tail on the side. The scallops were cooked to perfection and the mix underneath them was excellent. The lobster was the same though, extremely salty and mine was overcooked a bit. The dining area we were in, was in a corner of the restaurant, I requested a window seat and I guess that was the best they could do for us. It was extremely loud which, that’s nothing that can control but it was loud in there none the less. When dropping 300+ on fine dining, I just expect more and we didn’t get it. They did provide a special menu for the occasion and brought out a desert which was ok but other than that, kind of a lackluster evening in a place that is supposed to be one of the best dining experiences in San Diego. Thank you to Marissa and the the girl who helped out all night, those two were great. Wish I could have remembered her name because she deserves the credit as well. I rated this experience honestly.

The host staff, three of whom I encountered, were strangely grim and corporate and baffling. For example, I arrived an hour early for a 6pm dinner with a friend. I wanted to have a glass of wine with a window table so that I could reflect on the day in peace and do some writing. I was told that all the empty seats by the windows were reserved and that I could only sit at the noisy bar. I went back upstairs to the hostess and asked if I could reserve a seat by a window. She asked host staff downstairs if this were possible and it was. I went back downstairs and sat at a table by a window. This seems like far too much negotiating when the restaurant and lounge area were one third occupied. It's basically absurd: can I have a table by a window for an hour? NO. A moment later I succeeded in reserving a table by a window, so YES. Great, I was able to have a glass of wine by the window as the sun set and reflect on the day and do some work. The result was fine for me, but why did I have to wade through four host staff to achieve this result? The wait staff were excellent, including Ryan and Kevin. What horrible punishment awaits the host staff if they put a foot wrong? They were all remote, grim, and hesitant and were very reluctant to seat a single woman in an empty lounge at a table window. Are the host staff supposed to make single women feel unwelcome???
