Renowned Orange County restaurateur David Wilhelm, along with longtime partner Gregg Solomon, purchased this iconic location in the heart of charming downtown San Juan Capistrano overlooking the Jewel of the California missions.

The menu features many of his signature classic comfort foods such as his Famous Buttermilk Fried Chicken, French 75's Onion Soup, and Whiskey Shrimp Dijon, featured at his Tavern House Kitchen+Bar in Newport Beach.

Chef Wilhelm is a longtime South County resident, well known for the many concepts he has created over the years including Kachina, Sorrento Grille, French 75, Savannah Chophouse and Jimmy's Famous American Tavern.

Tavern at the Mission has a large, tree covered, pet friendly patio with beautiful mission views. The interiors have been beautifully renovated with a chandelier lit dining room and a warm central fireplace. Our' Tumbleweed Bar' is designed as an homage to San Juan Capistrano's Equestrian and Vaqueros history.

Always great service! Food is excellent as well. Servers Stella, John and Natalie and others are always on top of it! 0h and David too! If I had one complaint it would be that it gets very loud inside the restaurant, can’t talk to people at your table very easily. I give the restaurant 5 stars!

The French Onion soup is delicious and if you have a choice of waitperson Bettie P or Reuben are beyond and above expectations.

Service was a bit slow but it’s a holiday evening. Food was very tasty but very expensive for salads and starters. Loved they have kept Brown Derby Salad but it’s a take on it not original recipe. Coconut cake was great!

Took our son’s family out after a tournament. We were seated right away , party of 6, the server was new , but very nice . The bar was backed up so we didn’t get our 2nd round of drinks until after we finished our meal . They should get more bartenders on a Saturday night . We had fish and chips, the fried chicken was excellent . My husband loved the duck . We had a fabulous table on the patio with blankets on the chairs .
