Designed by Rockwell Group, TAO Downtown offers a distinct sense of arrival and discovery and is the first TAO venue where guests descend into a multi-level space. The subterranean restaurant, located in the heart of Chelsea, is intended to look and feel as if it has been there for decades and only unearthed recently to reveal the artifacts within. Upon arrival, guests immediately encounter a long corridor with a dragon scale patterned screen and Chinese calligraphy murals mounted on weathered brick walls.

All guests joining us for the final seating must be 21+ years of age. All guests attending our final seating must prepay the per person amount. In the event that you need to cancel, we ask that all cancelations be made by Monday, December 23rd in order to receive a full refund. After the 23rd, they are non-refundable. Decreases in party size cannot use remaining minimum towards beverage.

    We had a reservation for 8:15 for 6 people. 4 pf us arrived at 8:20 and checked in and we were told to check in again when the whole party is here. The rest of the party arrived at 8:28 and we checked in right away and we were told to wait on the lounge to be seated. We waited for 10 minutes and then asked the hostess what’s going on and she told us they gave our table because we were late (less than 15 minutes and checked in first time less than 7 minutes late to the reservation) and we need to wait for tables to finish. The hostess was very unpleasant and made us feel like we are not welcome. We also mentioned we have 2 pregnant ladies and no one cared although both of them were very hungry and couldn’t get anything to eat for more than 45 minutes as we were seated only at 9:05, 50 minutes after the reservation. Then the service on the table was OK but far from TAO’s standard, for example when we got the first dish which was sushi we had no plates on the table and no soy sauce and the saucier and we waited for 2-3 minutes and needed to ask for it. We usually love TAO but this experience probably makes it our last time.

    Had reserved our table 2 months in advance and called on the day twice to let the staff know we were still coming and were 4mins away (traffic in Manhattan is bad). The venue has a 15min grace period but given we were on the way and were 4mins over this time they decided to give our table to someone else. The staff did not demonstrate any level of customer service when taking this into consideration and seemed completely robotic in their approach. They were going to keep us waiting for over an hour for when a table became available which is completely unacceptable so we decided to leave and book a table elsewhere in Catch which was so much better and the staff there were amazing. I would not recommend giving your money to a place where customer satisfaction is absent and you would still be expected to leave a substantial tip which I find highly disappointing.

    It’s packed. We had to wait 45 min after our reservation slot to be seated. Decoration is amazing and food was pretty good. Service was excellent.
