From the OpenTable editors: Eating at a MICHELIN-Starred restaurant can feel like a serious event, but that’s never the case at State Bird Provisions. The hardest—and best—part about eating here is sticking to your order, as a dim sum cart rolls by with plates like cheesy sauerkraut pancakes and other New American dishes with Asian accents. Thanks to an ever-changing menu from James Beard Award-winning chefs Stuart Brioza and Nicole Krasinski, each visit is better than the last.

Amazing food. A must go in San Francisco! The trout dip and duck liver pate are our favorites.

We were able to snag a 5:30 tables at the counter on Friday night. Doors open at 5:30 and reservations are highly recommended and there is a waitlist line for those without. The team has a chat and a cheer before opening the doors and the vibe is upbeat and cheery. The waitstaff is friendly and accommodating. Our server explained how the menu worked and asked if we had any food allergies which we did. He consulted on the current menu and marked it so we me what was okay, what could be modified and what simply could not which was very helpful. We ordered a porter beer and I had 2 glasses of Syrah. The wine by the glass selection was nothing special but good. Most of the dishes are served dim sum style, tiny bites for two which allows you to sample many without getting too full to enjoy the experience. We began with a couple of oysters which my companion said were delicious. Then we shared the duck pate with teeny corn muffins. It was creamy with a great flavor. Then we shared the smoked trout dip with potato chips. Yummy with a nice balance of flavors., I ordered the broccoli which was a bit of a disappointment- blanched broccoli with some everything bagel seasoning thrown on it. Next up were these fabulous tiny pork ribs with a spicy sauce. Then we had a burrata topped with 5 pepper and in top of some sort of bread. It was good but not outstanding. I then ordered the beef tartare that was to die for in its complexity of flavors. Lastly we skipped dessert to try the blue corn pancakes with bruised bacon and coffee butter that simply rocked. Our damage was $175 I highly recommend you give this place a try!

SBP is an amazing spot. The food is delicious. They have a set menu as well tapas style dishes they present to you. These items run from $6-$16. Great spot to go with a few friends. The staff is friendly and very attentive.

Absolutely incredible meal! Everything about it from start to finish was near perfection! Firstly, the hospitality is on point. A server is always right there when you need them to be and they made the amazing suggestion to get half an order of each of the pancakes rather than a full order of one. The servers that come around with the trays of food also know what they’re doing. When I ordered a single oyster for myself and my partner made a comment about not liking oysters, the servers gave us an extra one for free just so my partner could try it. This was an absolutely amazing opportunity to show not just above-and-beyond hospitality, but also that the restaurant truly believes in the quality of its food. And you know what? My partner did say it was the best oyster he ever had! They’re known for their quail however, I just think it’s not meaty enough of a bird for how it was prepared (Most parts were more breading than quail). As for everything else I tried, I just can’t think of any criticisms at all. I guess I could complain about my glass of rosé but that’s entirely my fault. I went with sparkling when I should have gone with still. The hit of the night were the blue corn-pepita pancakes with braised bacon and coffee butter. I wasn’t even going to order it until the server made the suggestion and I’m glad they did! The pecorino and ricotta pancakes are good too just not as good. The wedge salad is all the right balance of flavors with a nice crunch of lettuce to feel extra bright and fresh. The fried brussel sprouts are paired with an incredibly deep cashew satay sauce. The umami richness is impeccable. The almond financiers with duck liver mousse are another example of perfect balance in flavor. The financiers are light and fluffy and the mousse is smooth and delicate. I thought the burrata and bread dish came a too late into the night for us to fully enjoy however the peanut milk was the perfect cap to our evening.

We've dined at State Bird probably ten times before, including ordering lots of take out during covid. However, this was the first time I walked out feeling underwhelmed and like the prices didn't make sense for the food served. Of course there were some very good dishes, but there were more average dishes and a few not-so-good dishes. I've listed the ones I can remember, but I know there were more. Winners: Trout dip and chips Brussel Sprouts Smoked Egg Tofu Mushroom Royal Soup (any soup they serve is excellent) Average: Persimmons Blue Corn Pepita Pancakes Pork Belly Salad Candy Cap angel food cake Not-so-good: Agnolotti pasta (12 tiny rolls of spicy cheese, not fancy, extremely pricey... $30? No.) Cauliflower (not sure how this missed the mark, but bland) Garlic Bread We ordered a LOT. We spent over $500 for four people (yes, we had some drinks too). Sadly, I think this trip made realize that I don't need to go back.

State Bird had been in my list for a long time, and I finally got around to going. It didn’t disappoint…it was everything I had read about the place. The Dim Sum concept is amazing, come hungry and explore the creative foods off of the carts. We had the State Bird w/ Provisioms and the Beef Cheeks from the set menu, and both were fantastic. The Smoked Trout Dip, Shrimp, and Scallop were great from the cart. The venue is fun, it’s noisy, so keep that in mind. It’s a great date location, or group with friends…it’s not a quiet romantic date location. I’ve eaten at all three locations…Anchovy Bar, The Progress, and State Bird….all three are great!

I was looking forward to eating as this well known restaurant but left underwhelmed. We tried a lot of the dishes to give it a fair shake. Some worked but many just did not carry any flavor at all. What worked: the gem salad and the smoked trout dip with chips for dipping and the oyster with a veggie topping was OK. What didn’t work: most everything else. Pork belly, very dry and lacked flavor, scallion pancakes - zero flavor paired with small cubes of bacon and a seasoned butter that did not work, dumplings in ginger broth- broth bland and dumplings hard … Like the dough was not fully steamed or poorly made … I could go on and on. Service was excellent, though, so an extra star for that. Food alone it would have been two stars. $300 for three people with an extra $130 for a decent Pinot noir.
