Six Russell is a vibrant neighbourhood bistro and bakery nestled in the centre of Sandy Bay. As a smaller venue we embody familiarity and aim to be an extension to the community whether it’s a morning coffee from the laneway, a quick afternoon bite from our providore, or an evening filled with food and drinks from the bistro; we offer a space for regulars to connect and newcomers to enjoy good food and good company. Our space and both the food and beverage menus have been designed to suit all occasions, with the menus sharing a focus on small producers.

Firstly I understand that this is week 3 of being open and the Bistro is "fine tuning" their menu. I also appreciate the fact that at last we have a new Western cuisine Bistro in Sandy Bay as opposed to all the asian influenced restaurants and take-aways. The waitress was absolutely delightful and charming. She also adapted her style of service to assist and fit in with an elderly couple adding humour and interest to the evening. 1. Only 4 choices for starters and 4 for mains. Understandable if establishing the kitchen and menu... However, to be sold out of 1 main at 7pm which equates to 25% of the choice, makes it hard for diners with specific preferences to meat, fish or vegetarian, to have an option to choose from. 2. Absolutely no accompaniment's to the main courses and having to purchase salad, vegetables (cant remember seeing that choice) or 3 forms of potatoes is a significant cost to the bill at the end of the meal. 3. at $70 for a 500gm TBone and nothing else on the plate was a little disappointing.... however, (yes that word again), it was beautifully presented and one of the tenderest and tastiest pieces of meat we have had in "yonks" . Bravo. Still to pay another $10 for chips to soak up the juice is a little tough on the pocket and doesn't encourage one to think of the Bistro as a regular venue. 4. The Twice Cooked Goats Cheese Soufflé was cold and I don't recall this being stated on the menu. It was disappointing and tasted like a piece of cold egg frittata. I adore a good soufflé and make beautiful ones myself hence the disappointment. Good luck and I hope that the fine tuning of the menu eventuates in a few more choices with either slightly more on the plate or better value for money.

This is a new restaurant in Hobart - and we had high expectations. We weren't let down. The setting is modern and stylish, the menu is innovative and deeply considered. The service was very good and overall, we had a great time. The fish (ling and crab ballotine) was exceptional. So many other things we wish we had room for, but we will just have to go back again. As the restaurant also has a bakery, I'd suggest trying the breads - the duck live parfait and the garlic bun both looked and smelled amazing. A big congratulations to the team - 3 weeks in and they have really raised the bar for dining in Hobart.

Entrees were good - great flavours and delicate pastry for the tomato stracciatella and duck parfait generous with REALLY good bread (like their bakery). Sadly the 1/2 a duck breast and 4 taglietelle whilst, tasty with a good depth of flavour jus and pasta filling, certainly wasn't exquisite enough to justify the $70 price tag. Yikes! We eat out a lot and that is certainly north of what anyone would expect and certainly not a 'sharing' meal as suggested. We politely mentioned this to the excellent waiter and they did discount it by 10% to be fairer. I'm hoping a few teething problems can be sorted out so we have a lovely local bistro with the 'feel and menu' of a local bistro (not asking for cheap, just fair).
