Accessed from the High Street and through a glass lobby, Quod restaurant with its terrace and bar, forms the hub of the Old Bank Hotel. Formerly a banking hall it was transformed by owner Jeremy Mogford to become Oxford's largest and most successful restaurant. Stylish, contemporary design describes the space which houses an amazing collection of young British art. Sandra Blow, Craigie Aitchinson and Gary Hume adorn the walls. There is a spectacular terrace where diners can enjoy a morning coffee, the superb value two course lunch or a cocktail.

We arrived a bit earlier and we stayed at the bar to wait for our table. We enjoyed a nice cocktail and it was nice to watch other cocktails been prepared. The lady preparing them was very good, nuce and friendly. Time passed by until we realised they had forgotten about us. As soon as we made them aware they gave us a nice table and as a gesture, there was no charge for the drinks we already had. They took our order in no time. The food was fresh and delicious. The atmosphere very nice and enjoyable. The service was also very nice and this made us forget the little oversight that happened at the beginning. All the people working there were extremely kind and pleasant. We will definitely go back.

A late supper following a wonderful concert at the Sheldonian. My nephew and I were guests in the Old Bank Hotel, so it made perfect sense to eat in the restaurant. Overall, the experience was a happy one. The front of house staff are a delight and willing to get things right. However, an overly long menu lacking in any clear identity should have rung alarm bells from the start. Adequate starters of Octopus, potatoes & Chorizo was better than a lacklustre chicken and ham hock terrine with an inoffensive, if pretty tasteless, pear chutney. My nephew, who eats everything put in front of him, felt the potato portion was overly generous as a starter. My seared duck breast, roast celeriac purée and braised red cabbage was a crashing disappointment. Grey, dry, overcooked duck with flabby skin was just an insult, and should never have been sent from the kitchen. That it also managed to arrive cold was quite an achievement. The celeriac purée was very good indeed, the red cabbage overwhelming in its abundance. A huge plate of sad mediocrity. Front of house were engaged, concerned and stylish enough to remove the duck from the bill. Our choice of wine was unavailable, and we were offered an inferior bottle ‘at the same price’ as though this were a bonus. We chose a very good Bordeaux at a much better (lower) price point. Additional mistakes on the final bill just added to the irritation. That said, it is worth repeating that the staff are absolutely lovely. As indeed was breakfast the next day. In the same restaurant, with equally well-trained and smart staff, the contrast could not have been greater. The highest quality ingredients, treated with understanding, respect and care, gave us a breakfast to remember. Truly excellent bacon, a perfect, herb-infused sausage, coarsely textured, sublime black pudding and great coffee too. It was astonishingly good. Morning chef, please talk to evening chef.

We loved every minute., However a fixed 13:5% service charge seems too much.

Reserved a table - my favourite (402). Turned-up, and, because they had a better booking, I was relegated to another table with my guest. Surely, when a regular requests a table well in advance, Quod should honour that booking? To turn up, and to expect the table that one has booked, and then to be turned away is unacceptable. If I had have been forewarned, I would have booked elsewhere.

Many thanks for your feedback. I am sorry to hear we were unable to accommodate you on your usual table. As a restaurant we endeavour to meet our guests every request. Unfortunately this is not always possible as we have to accommodate parties of various sizes and sometimes requests for the same table. I concede prior notification would have been beneficial in this case. I do hope this experience doesn't deter you from thinking of us in the future. With thanks, Joe Brown - Restaurant Manager.
