Fine Dining in every aspect. Proudfoot & Bird, named after the original Hotel Fort Des Moines architects, pays homage to the glamorous days of years past with every detail. Adorned with stunning marble tables, intricate gold ceiling inlay, plush soft seating, and grand circular bar we have recreated a time that was filled with elegance, extravagance, and indulgence. Housed in the historic Hotel Fort Des Moines, we have taken every step possible to protect a valued piece of Des Moines’ cherished history. Two semi-private areas available, seating eight and ten guests respectfully.

    My wife and I went to Proudfoot & Bird as a belated anniversary dinner. We had a couple drinks at the bar while waiting for our reservation. The Smoke in the Orchard was great, the Vanilla Old Fashion was good but not much vanilla flavor. Once seated our server was great. He had lots of knowledge of the food and history of the building. We had farmers cheese as an appetizer which was very good. My wife had the duck and I had the venison. Both were amazing. The duck had amazing flavor and presentation. The venison was spectacular and the carrots were so much better than I expected. The only negative was the duck was closer to medium well than medium rare. The skin-on potatoes were a perfect side with the venison. We will definitely go back.

    Elegant space, open and upscale. Cocktails are inventive. Creative twists on classic dishes. I had the sablefish with chorizo crust and white beans, which was perfectly cooked and delicious. My partner had the steak frites which was also perfectly cooked. Service was excellent, though we did wait a bit to get the bill. A great choice for a date night or other special occasion.

    Gretchen, Levi, Jenelly, Kara & Eric were phenomenal. They made my experience very homey and comfortable and I appreciate their service so much. Their care and attention to evey diner was truly inspiring. Thank you!!

    We arrived at a cold and nearly empty restaurant. I left a $300 deposit for four guests a week prior using the Open table app. We asked the hostess NOT to sit us in a window seat as the restaurant was cold. She insisted on seating us at the window and stated the other tables were for reservations! Was my reservation at a lesser tier than the other guests?? Ten minutes later a manager finally moved us to a more appropriate table.Needless to say the supposed reserved tables remained empty most of the night. The Thanksgiving meal was cold and mediocre at best. Lest you think all was negative, our server, Kara, was delightful and, the cocktails, of which I needed a few, were excellent. This is in stark contrast to the Thanksgiving meal we enjoyed in 2022 at Proudfoot. That experience was what brought us back in 2024. The hostess at this restaurant needs a lesson in hospitality.

    A very nice Thanksgiving lunch! It’s a beautiful place. Servers were perfect. Food delicious! Squash soup was fabulous. The turkey, gravy, potatoes, dressing, green beans and cranberry sauce were all way above good. And with a little bit of difference. Desserts perfect. Thanks.
