It’s Personal at Petronella. We are a relaxed, informal restaurant situated on romantic Butterslip Lane. Petronella is charming, situated over two floors, in one of Kilkenny's oldest and historic buildings - we focus on wonderful Irish food and service - seasonal, delicious, yet joyously casual dining. The restaurant pays homage to Petronella de Meath, the first woman to be burned at the stake, just meters away from our restaurant 700 years ago. We hope you love Petronella as much as we do.

Petronella is renowned as one of Kilkenny’s premier dining experiences, but its origins are steeped in a remarkable story. The restaurant pays homage to Petronella, the first woman accused of witchcraft in Ireland and the first woman in Europe to be executed by burning at the stake. When you leave our restaurant, take a few steps around the corner to the site of Kilkenny town hall, where Petronella met her tragic fate.

    As far as restaurants go in Kilkenny. Petronella has jumped right up to the top of my list. Welcoming staff, great food, great history and great vibes had with the restaurant. Selection is minimal but well varied. Drinks selection is also minimal but caters for everybody. There are not a huge amount of seats so it is recommended to book in advance.

    I had the chicken and bacon salad for starters and it was very nice, mains I had the beef and it was also lovely. My wife had the vegetarian lasagne and it was very average. I had the sticky toffee pudding for dessert and there was hardly any sticky toffee on the pudding. The service was excellent and the times between courses was also very good.

    My family and I had a wonderful experience at Petronella over the weekend. They're service was 10/10. The short rib beef was top class. Only negative was the dessert was poor. Both the brownie and sticky toffee was quite dry. Otherwise, it was a solid 9/10, would return.

    Overall, our meal was very good as was the service. Best meal so far this trip. The building and ambiance were perfect. Comfortable and not pretentious. The wine menu was a little weak, but on par with most Irish restaurants. After all, beer and whiskey are king here.
