About this restaurant

  • Good for special occasions
  • Charming
  • Fancy
Located on Charleston's historic Broad Street, Oak Steakhouse is a classic American steakhouse. A classic array of both wet and dry aged Certified Angus® Beef are featured on the menu. Ingredients are sourced locally and regionally from sustainable farmers and fisherman to accent the steakhouse menu. Items including local oysters on the half-shell, Clammer Dave's caper clams and a daily fresh fish selection depending on the season. Other popular dishes include the whole fried lobster, goat.sheep.cow artisanal cheese plate, wedge of Kurios Farms bibb lettuce salad, the house-made pasta and vegetarian plate. The expansive and impressive wine program at Oak Steakhouse emphasizes big California Cabernets and Old World reds from Italy and Bordeaux with more than 200 wines by the bottle and 20 wines by the glass. The bar attracts a loyal, local following from nearby businesses and neighborhoods with its great cocktails and happy hour. Inside a historic bank building that dates back to 1848, Oak's stately setting features three floors with five distinct dining areas. Arched windows, 20-foot ceilings, original metal work, fireplaces and 150-year-old heart pine floors, offers the perfect setting for enjoying a special evening.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: In a historic bank building from 1848, Oak Steakhouse rises up three stories of leather booths, exposed brick, and cozy fireplaces. This is the place for seafood towers, Angus steaks, and bold Cabernets. It’s the heart of the Indigo Road group, helmed by James Beard semifinalist restaurateur Steve Palmer. There are now seven locations across the South, but none beat the original—Condé Nast Traveler calls it one of the best restaurants in Charleston, while others rank it among the best steakhouses in the country.

We came to celebrate our birthday dinner here at Oak in Charleston on Saturday. We were able to easily snag a reservation and parking was easy on us due to the time of our reservation. Street parking directly across from restaurant. We ordered the Dry Aged Prime Ribeye and it was plenty to share between us both! The owner gifted us a free bottle of red wine to go with our steak. Oysters Rockefeller are a MUST!! (Think creamy, bacon & breadcrumb vibe). The Strawberry Shortcake is a necessity to wrap up the end of a phenomenal meal. If I could rate it higher than 5 stars I would 100%. Last but certainly not least, our waiter was SO attentive, our glasses never went half empty. 10/10 truly exceptional service! We did also try two cocktails. The Berry Bad Decisions is a smoky blueberry tequila/mezcal & the Kiwi Me Softly is a delicious, balanced sweet martini.

Great ambiance and our server Ryan was excellent. The appetizers were extremely enjoyable, but the main course fell extremely short of expectations. Our steaks were overcooked and under seasoned and the chicken dish was just ok. We really wanted to love this place but in a foodie town like Charleston there are better places to grab a meal.

My husband and I visited Oak a few years ago and it was incredible. Huge scallops perfectly seared,, dry aged porterhouse sliced perfectly off the bone, presentation beautiful.. flavors out of this world and everything tasted amazing. Everything you would expect for a 350 dollar meal. He even received a beautiful chocolate cake for his birthday! Fast forward to last night , as we decided to partake in the opulence of Oak once again … and this time was quite different. My cocktail was completely different on the second round than the first, the Porterhouse was really tough and overcooked on the filet half, cooked properly but very tough on the strip side.. the scallops were laughable. I have seen larger at Golden Corral and they were not seared properly at all.. He was so very disappointed for his birthday meal and I will never book this restaurant again. As someone else stated, there are way too many wonderful eateries in Charleston to take your chances on a very expensive meal. His steak alone was $165 .

The saying do not order fish at a steakhouse stands true. Their catch of the day was tough as nails and the lobster was watery. Service great. Noise level was out of control.

My birthday dinner was great and our waiter, Rick, was so kind and very knowledgable about the menu. I got the filet which was a little charred, but still very tasty. My boyfriend got the Oak burger and loved it!

Not impressed. First of all, I did not appreciate the waiter asking, TWICE, what price point of wine I wanted to buy. Instead of just providing his pairing recommendation and description, he insinuated a limited purchase power. Secondly, my party waited over an hour to be served. Thirdly, my party was gifted a bottle of wine, yet the waiter failed to properly explain the gift and who it was from. I will not be patronizing this restaurant anytime soon!

One of our favorite restaurants in Charleston. We have been coming since 2009. Server Chris was great and food was very good. The management came to our table for a food issue which was nice. When I gave him my critique he was very understanding and handled it. We will be back soon!
