The Mountain House has a rich history dating back to the late 19th century. Serving as a rest stop for travelers, loggers and homesteaders in the Santa Cruz Mountains- we have evolved into a beloved destination known for our Coastal Countryside cuisine and rustic, intimate ambiance. Offering a menu highlighting game meats, locally sourced ingredients, and a curated selection of California and Old World wines, the Mountain House is one of the most unique settings in California. From a roadhouse to fine dining, the unassuming red cabin has stood the test of time along with the majestic redwoods that surround it.

Today, the restaurant is owned and operated by distinguished chefs Dmitry Elperin and William Roberts. We offer a three-course prix fixe menu for in our dining rooms and additionally, we serve an à la carte menu in our bar and lounge, available on a first-come, first-serve basis. Take the scenic route to The Mountain House, where nature, history, and hospitality converge.

The food was great! Among the 7of us we had the beet salad, scallops, and quail first course; salmon, steak, and pork second course; and flourless chocolate cake, apple torte, creme brulee desserts. Everything was wonderful, including the bread. Overall, it was a lovely, tasty evening!

Cocktail menu was disappointing. Limited sprits selection. One rum choice. Host was in a hurry to get us to our table long before our reservation time.

Our first time back since the new owners took over and it could not have been better. Same cozy, rustic ambience and excellent cuisine. We had the scallops to start followed by the pork tenderloin and short ribs as entrees. The wines were wonderfully paried as well. In a word, everything was perfection. A shout out to Sebastian, a true professional and gentleman who helped make our evening extra special. Looking forward to our next visit.

My wife and I had a great dinner at Mountain House. Beet salad and scallops were winners as starters, and both the chicken and salmon mains were outstanding. Gran Marnier crème brûlée was fantastic as well. All staff were very pleasant and demonstrated pride in where they work and genuine enjoyment to be with their coworkers.

Fantastic! Highly recommend, what a gem! Loved the venison meatballs, the rack of venison and flourless chocolate cake. Wine pairings were perfect. Sebastian provided exceptional service. Joined the wine club. Will be back soon.

Great restaurant for that special occasion. There is a three-course prix-fixe menu for $87. (No a la carte.) Everything we ordered was beautifully prepared and delicious: scallops, heirloom tomato soup, short ribs, chicken, pear & almond tart, cheese plate. The bread is possibly the best in the SF Bay Area. (2 slices complimentary, $6 for an additional order.) There are two dining areas. One is glass enclosed and has a wonderful view of the forest, if you're there during daylight hours. However, we could hear every conversation coming from the neighboring tables, so we asked to be switched to the other dining room, which is larger and has a fireplace, and the sound was more muffled. There is also a pub area with a separate menu.

The food, service and ambience were wonderful. The only criticism is they gave me the wrong dessert wine. I noticed it was wasn’t a great pairing but I didn’t think to check the menu until I got home.

First time dining at Mountain House and I enjoyed every part of my meal. My husband and I had the following. - bacon wrapped quail - scallops - beef short rib - venison - chocolate brownie - basque style pumpkin cheesecake Our meal started with two delicious croquettes and fresh hot bread with delicious butter. The first course was the scallops and quail, the scallops were cooked to perfection. My husband loved the quail but I thought my scallops were better. Our second course came out perfectly cooked, the venison was a medium rare and full of flavor with a sweet parsnip puree and hazelnut lingonberry sauce. The beef short rib was slowly cooked and feel apart with my fork, the mashed potatoes and root vegetables really balanced it out the dish, my only issue was the Brussel sprouts were boiled and quite bland. Our reservation was later in the evening so the kitchen was out of the chocolate molten cake so we got the chocolate brownie a la mode instead and their seasonal special Basque style pumpkin cheesecake. There wasn’t anything special about the brownie, the but cheesecake was delicate, not too sweet, and quite light. I could have had 3 more of the cheesecake. We have family coming into town and we will be returning with our family for sure.
