Magna Kainan is the passion project of Chef Carlo Lamagna, Food & Wine’s 2021 Best New Chef and 2022 James Beard finalist and Chef Max Mackissock (Michelin recommended A5 Steakhouse and Michelin Bib Gourmand awarded Ash’Kara). Kainan, which means “eatery” in Tagalog, will be a refined, woodfired approach to Filipino comfort food..
At Magna Kainan, just like our sister restaurant in Portland, Oregon, Magna Kusina, our mission is to share the vibrant flavors and rich traditions of Filipino cuisine and culture through a contemporary lens. Whether you’re new to our culinary heritage or a longtime fan, we aim to create an experience that resonates deeply and sparks joy and connection.

    Great atmosphere and service is great. The food is fusion filipino food. It is not your mom’s cooking but the twist of the food was well done. The staff stated that it is family style but the portions were not big enough for family style. I suggest ordering your own “ulam”.

    This is such a great new restaurant! The food was excellent, service was top notch, the ambiance and decor were well designed, and the location is improving. Parking was not easy but with the construction in the area, I’m sure it will improve.

    Really wanted to love and support this restaurant, but our experience was poor especially the waiter who tried to gaslight and blame us. We got the fried rice with shrimp paste, which as a Vietnamese person I love anything with shrimp paste. The dish was a salt bomb and inedible. The self proclaimed “white midwestern boy”waiter gaslit us (Asians) trying to blame our “inexperience” with Asian cuisine instead of just apologizing for the dish. It is not our “inexperience” with shrimp paste. It is our issue with it being so salty we had to spit it out. Luckily, a female staff member and handled it graciously. However, my wife and I were dumbfounded by this guy. We canceled our future reservations at the restaurant and will be sure to let our friends know of our experience. Other dishes that fell flat: the eggplant skewer, citrus salad. Their crab noodles were good though. Ube sticky rice was ok.

    The staff at this restaurant deserve the highest praise! From the moment we arrived, we were treated with such warmth and kindness. The team was incredibly attentive. Special shoutout to Shawn and Nick who went above and beyond to make our experience exceptional. If you're looking for a restaurant with incredible hospitality and a great atmosphere, Magna Kainan is the place to go. Cheers from Chicago!

    Loved everything! The lechon was amazing and so were all the cocktails. Will definitely be back, so glad to finally have a good and authentic Filipino restaurant in Denver! Steve, our waiter, was amazing too. Great service and food.

    The Great- Pandesal, Lumpia, Pancit, Adobo Rice, Cocktails The Alright- Inasal The Don't Ever Get These- Bistek ($60, high quality steak, but really just a steak, NOTHING like a FIlipino Traditional Bistek). Most pointless and non Flip dish on the menu Desserts- A total waste. Filipinos are known for their funky desserts, these were pointless and didn't actually even taste good.

    How exciting, a new restaurant, new cuisine, in a great RiNo location. Despite the pedigree of the chef, and the positive review trends, there is not a lot to commend Magna right now IMHO. Pork belly skewer was mostly fat, lamb not much better, chicken skewer the best of the bunch we tried. Lumpia, the Filipino food standard, were served in plentiful numbers and filled with lots of flavorful pork goodness, even as they were oily and stuck to the paper liner. And the signature Crab Noodles were unusual and almost inedible, goopy, too salty, and the servers brought serving tongs only as an afterthought. The acclaimed Biko dessert was sweet and ricey and just OK. Regarding the front-of-house, they were trying hard and will continue to do so I'm sure, as the team needs a lot of work and better coaching. We really want Magna Kainan to succeed, and they are poised to improve and join peers in Denver's diverse dining scene. Not sure I'll go back but you can see for yourself and see if my experience is on target or otherwise.
