In January 2020, Little Madrid Tapas Café opened in Chicago’s Andersonville neighborhood, a small, cozy, and colorful space. The restaurant transported guests back to Old Madrid with its warm atmosphere, delicious flavors, and enticing aromas that emanated from the kitchen. With a global pandemic raging around the world, Little Madrid Tapas Café remained a steady presence in the neighborhood and soon emerged as one of the best Spanish restaurants in Chicago.

Little Madrid Tapas cafe is a must go-to for the best tapas in Chicago! I grew up in the Andersonville neighborhood and have been going to Little Madrid for roughly four years now. Although I’m Cuban-American, my family is of Spanish descent so it’s nice to experience the Spanish culture through food and music. Every time I go I am pleasantly surprised at how right at home I feel. Some of my favorites are the calamari, patatas bravas, albondigas and queso de cabra. The salmorejo soup and paella are exquisite and out of this world! Chef’s kiss one hundred times over. Do not snooze on Little Madrid Tapas Cafe, you’ll only be sorry if you do!

After a dispute over the bill, the owner attacked my in-laws on the basis of their national origin. We reserved a table for 5 on Tuesday, November 26, at 8:00pm., to celebrate my son's birthday and our in-laws' arrival in town for the holidays. This was my and my husband's third trip to Little Madrid in less than a month, and we were well on our way to becoming regulars. The food and wine are terrific, and until last Tuesday, we thought the service was pretty great too. After a really nice dinner, my in-laws arrived back at their hotel to discover that Little Madrid had charged us for an extra bottle of wine and two glasses of wine, which we did not order or drink. The difference was nearly $100. Unfortunately, we didn't notice it while we were still in the restaurant. When my mother-in-law called, both the manager and a man who said he was the owner accused her of trying to run a scam on the restaurant. They said they had "proof" that we drank the extra wine (we didn't order it, we didn't drink it) and then they hung up on her. When she called back, the owner said to my mother-in-law (a gentle and polite person): "Look, this isn't Cuba." The implication being that Cubans are liars and thieves, and low-class, and always trying to run a scam. So I guess we know how they talk about us when we're not in earshot. We won't be back.

Everything about Little Madrid Tapas Cafe was perfect. Having spent many years in Spain, this place is the real deal. They have a fabulous selection of wine and a wide array of traditional tapas and pintxos from anchovies and croquetas to morcilla and queso de cabra. The service was perhaps my favorite part. Our waiter went above and beyond for us and our requests and was very attentive to our needs and experience while also giving us plenty of space to catch up without too many interruptions. This is a gem of a cafe that can serve as both a great date night spot or a place for a casual happy hour with friends or colleagues.
