Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Phenomenal experience both with service and food. We planned to try the restaurant when it opened, but somehow never had a chance to go. I’m so happy that we have an opportunity to go the other night. Such a fantastic experience. And, hour teenagers also requested to go on our next visit.

This was our second visit to Le Coq. The food was excellent each time. The service was great both visits. The servers are very personable and down to earth. The head chef even dropped food off at our table. All the dishes are done right and are very tasty.

Service was good, not exceptional . Food was either very good or just average. Some dishes were outstanding, some disappointing. Tuna, salmon, mashed potatoes were outstanding. Turkey, short rib, average. The vibe is pretty darn cool. Bathrooms are a work of art. Getting food consistently exceptional at this price point would bring us back.

Had the Thanksgiving meal, amazing price for not only the quality but also the quantity we got. Service was excellent, ambiance made me feel like i was in europe. Overall 10/10!
