Le Coq is James Beard Best Chef finalist Tara Monsod’s new wave French steakhouse. Inspired by the modern Parisian culinary landscape, chef Tara reinvents classic dishes through her signature approach, blending cross-cultural references and ingredients for a distinctly SoCal expression of French cuisine. Bright touches and hyper-seasonal products ground the menu with San Diego style, while nods to chef Tara’s Southeast Asian background are interwoven throughout. Located in downtown La Jolla in a 1930’s historic building with exposed brick walls, steel trusses, and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. Into this storied shell is inserted a posh 1970’s diner club.

Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Tara Monsod

From the OpenTable editors: The latest hotspot from powerhouse restaurant group Puffer Malarkey Collective, Le Coq is where you go for modern takes on French classics with SoCal and Asian influences. James Beard Award-nominated chef Tara Monsod dazzles with standout dishes like a duck l’orange with tamarind puree, kumquat, and chicory. Original exposed brick walls in the historic 1930s building, red velvet booths, and lush plants add to the swanky Parisian vibe.

Great vibe, 2nd time here since the opening, nice to see the pictures on the wall and drapes have a much warmer feel, mainly got appetizers- especially the tuna tartare, all very delicious, the drinks had way too much ice, probably young bartender, causing watered down taste and resulting in it hardly being a drink. I'll come back for dinner, but will be doing my drinks elsewhere.

Food and wine were great! Waygu steak was amazing along with the onions mushrooms side. There for anniversary dinner, hostess congratulated us upon seating, server never mentioned anything about it from start to finish. Even asking if any dessert was wanted, I had to initiate the comment that it’s our anniversary. For that price point of a dinner, not acceptable.

Kanpachi too sour from the lime. Visually not appealing because there were too many things covering the fish & couldn’t see the yellowtail. Flavors didn’t come together on the onion tart. The steak & frites was a disappointment. The ribeye was full of gristle. The gnocchi dish was tasty from the fact that the gnocchi’s were very light & fluffy and the crispy hazelnuts were a nice addition for texture. The best dish was the creamed spinach, probably the best I’ve ever eaten. So delicious that I could eat this all night. And not rich at all for a cream dish The highlight of the evening were the desserts. The Paris-Breat was outstanding, visually and taste wise. The Basque cheesecake was delicious except for the fact that there was too much salt for sweet dish. We decided that we would come again only for dessert. Overall, dinner was a disappointment. And the noise level was through the roof. We had to yell to hear each other. Management said they had the music turned up to hide the sound of a large group in the bar, but the loud music just made the room so noisy, it was irritating the whole evening. They made an effort to tone it down, but there wasn’t much improvement.

This restaurant pretends to be a french restaurant but it is not. The menu is very limited and the food is mediocre. I ordered lamb medium cooked and I got 4 pieces of undercook lamb meat with no decorations. Service is bad. We had a table for 4 and the main course of one of the guest arrived 25 minutes after the other main courses. my side dish arrived 30 minutes after the lamb. Very pretentious but no value for the money. The ambiance is nice and original but the music was too loud to cover the bad acoustic. This was my second time at le coq : the first time was just after they opened but we had the same problem with the service.

Fun venue and decor. Food is good, not great, and seemed to be average quality. Had higher expectations but was still a fun place for a date night.

A very underwhelming experience. The cavernous dining room was 75% empty during our dinner on Thursday, 7:00 PM. Despite the lack of business, our server was extremely slow greeting us taking our drink order. During the meal the server continued to be inattentive, and after patiently waiting, I had to flag him down twice for standard requests including our food order and the bill. Overall, the cooking and food quality was on par with a Paris sidewalk cafe and not fine dining. The lamb chops were overcooked and rubbery. The cheesecake was clumpy. The croquettes were overly salted. I don’t see how this restaurant survives…suggest they focus on Animae and cut their losses on this venture.

Restaurant knows how to take care of their customers. An order of steak and lobster they Forgot about the other half of the order which is the lobster . After we mentioned about it, it was served within mins. And desserts we ordered were complimentary plus gave my husband a slice of chocolate ganache cake with a candle on it . We went to Le Coq to celebrate his birthday. Unforgettable night indeed .
