Since 1931 and revived in 2024, Restaurant Ile de France combines old-world French culinary traditions with contemporary Montreal influences in the heart of Downtown.
Why they're an Icon
Executive chef: Chef Liam Hopkins
From the OpenTable editors: The stunning Art Deco architecture is reason enough to visit this landmark restaurant in Centre Eaton de Montréal, which first opened in 1931. Evenings flow from the elegant cocktail bar to the fine dining restaurant, where diners can indulge in classic fare such as prime beef tenderloin or gnocchi Parisienne while admiring the space’s well-preserved historic features.

Nice art deco design. Hostess service was fine. But due to the poor quality of the food I had, I will not go back. We ordered the bluefin tuna carpaccio with heirloom tomatoes. And a side order of fries.
The fries were like McDonald’s fries. The heirloom tomatoes were really yellow cherry tomatoes from Costco. They didn’t taste anything. The salad, or greenery was served on top of the tuna with no dressing. It was dry, annoying to eat, tasteless. I even thought the greenery was to hide the color and non-appetizing look of the tuna piece; which didn’t taste fresh. I was scared to eat it. It looked and tasted like a defrosted piece of tuna they dried with scott paper towel. I think they put pepper on the greenery and that was it. Even for a cheaper price I wouldn’t order it again from the same place. The table next to mine ordered a shrimp cocktail. Same thing, it looked like Costco shrimps I could have put on a bowl myself. Nothing exciting or appetizing about the dishes I saw through the 90 minutes there.

Wonderful service in a handsome room. The hangar steak/fries dish was perfect and the fried fish (fries extra $) more than did the trick. The dessert cart is a nice old school touch and our selections (basque cheesecake + apple crumble) didn’t disappoint. We were celebrating a birthday as well as another special occasion so the sparkler with dessert was appreciated. We hope to return soon.

Le 9e is a rare gem: elegant, charming, exquisitely delicious, and fun. If you are looking for something wonderful, you have found it.
The setting is gorgeous — everything has a refined art deco vibe with lovely attention to detail. The service was impeccable but also amiable. And the food! We chose a selection from the raw bar (divine), the burger (quite good), a sea bass special (mind-blowing), a squash and goat cheese side (heaven) and the brioche bread (addictive). I drank prosecco (delightful) and a port digestif (amazing).
For an experience of this caliber, our meal was surprisingly reasonably priced, making it a place we can go to not only for rare special occasions but for regular celebrations. We’re already planning our next dinner.
