Kibako is a new contemporary Japanese restaurant in 110 Great Portland Street.

Our menu offers unique and refined interpretations of well-known Japanese dishes, blending traditional techniques with modern flair. The restaurant is named after our signature kibako - expertly curated, omakase-style boxes of hand-crafted sushi and sashimi, chosen especially by the kitchen for our diners. Dishes will combine specialist Japanese ingredients such as Sanpuku nori and Kagoshima Wagyu beef with the highest-quality produce from around the world, including hand-picked Maldon rock oysters and 36-month aged organic Parmigiano Reggiano.

I’ve been to this restaurant several times. We decided to book it again for our two-year anniversary on a Saturday night at 8:15 pm. However, on Friday afternoon, I received an email from the restaurant stating that it would be closed for a few days and offering to book us at one of their sister restaurants. I immediately responded to the email and requested a reservation at RAI. I didn’t receive a reply until Saturday morning, at which point they informed me that availability at RAI was limited. I replied again, trying to book for 7 pm, but got no response. I even tried calling RAI three times, but no one answered. We decided to show up at RAI at 7 pm, only to be told by the staff that they were sorry but no reservations or tables were available. They mentioned they would inform the Kibako management team about the issue. “SORRY,” they said. Thanks for completely ruining our anniversary. Even now, the restaurant team still hasn’t responded to my emails. It’s ridiculous, especially considering I would be charged £50 per person if I canceled within 24 hours. But the restaurant can simply disregard pre-bookings and leave us stranded?

The restaurant has been closed with the notice from the sanitary officials about rats and mice manifestation and unsafe building. Open table still took the booking and we had to find something quickly to eat. Such a bad standard of everything

Great food and service. Tables are too slippery, and the music played was not suitable for a Japanese restaurant.

Not authentic Japanese food. Waiter was not familiar with the menu. Even the miso soup isn’t done well.

On Mother’s Day, we decided to take advantage of the Mother’s Day deal which included a champagne oyster deal for £14 per person. However, we were incredibly disappointed when the champagne served was far less than the advertised 125ml. Despite our concerns, the server seemed more interested in upselling additional glasses rather than addressing the issue. It was frustrating to receive such a small portion of champagne and one oyster for £14, which felt like a rip-off and ultimately ruined Mother’s Day for me. To add to our disappointment, the Wagyu we ordered for an additional £25 was served in a very small portion, which seemed unreasonable given the price. Throughout the meal, none of the servers checked on us, and we had to continually try to get their attention. When we requested soy sauce, we were met with reluctance and advised against it. When the bill arrived, totaling nearly £200 with a service charge of almost £20, we were dissatisfied with the level of service we had received. We asked for the service charge to be removed, but were met with hostility from the staff. Despite explaining our concerns about the champagne and the overall service, we were dismissed and made to feel as though we were in the wrong for raising the issue. Overall, we left feeling disappointed with the experience, especially considering the high price we paid. It was evident that the staff could benefit from more training in handling customer complaints and inquiries, as we felt ignored throughout our meal. Despite our efforts to address our concerns, we were met with hostility and reluctance to rectify the situation. Moving forward, it is clear that there is a need for improved training and customer service standards at the establishment. As paying customers, we expect to receive the quality of service and value for money that we deserve. Unfortunately, this experience fell far short of our expectations.
