Led by chef Kari Shaughnessy, the team breaks down whole animals, pickles vegetables, bakes sourdough, and crafts a simple but ambitious menu that makes it a standout in the region. The restaurant even snagged a James Beard Awards nomination in 2024, shining a spotlight on McMinnville's culinary bounty.


Philosophy

An enriching culinary experience, we set out to create delicious dinners while following a strict ethos on sourcing. We hold close relationships with all of our farmers and ranchers, making a uniquely personal menu. Dishes change weekly based on what is available on the farm and in the larder. While everything is sourced in a tight radius, the flavors are inspired by our travels and memories.

    Every single bite of every single dish was fantastically perfect! Flavors you would not expect to eat together created delicious bites. Dandelion pesto and celeriac cream together in the Chitara Pasta - wow!! The smoky undertones and light textures in the Cheese Cracker were unexpectedly delicious. One of the best cooked pork chops my husband has ever eaten was accented by squash curry(!) and tempura turnip. We were perfectly full from the 3 dishes we ate so we took home the Sweet Potato Butter Mochi Cake for later. You must try this one, the flavors of each element blended beautifully. All of the staff engaged in their excellent customer experience, everyone was friendly and welcoming. Last but not least, Hayward is an excellent value for fantastic food. Grab your reservation now, you will not be disappointed.

    Kickin Back. Worth every cent. Never skip the focaccia. The service is impeccable and attentive but not intrusive. Such a great place to eat and feel like it’s a special moment….. because every bite is.

    A refreshing experience. Fresh, delicious, exciting. Fine dining with out being stuffy. Everything was on point from the moment you got there until you walked out the door.

    My boyfriend and I had a wonderful experience and some delicious food. The Gigante beans was incredible and our favorite dish of the night. Our server Danny was the perfect amount of hospitable and knowledgeable. The steelhead with miso was well balanced and our dessert with sesame ice cream was yummy! Would love to go back sometime soon!

    I had the Kickback tasting menu, which covered most of the items on the menu. Each course was flavorful and celebrated local, seasonal products. Pickle and ferments Sesame focaccia with koji butter (fantastic, I told the chef this was the best bread I ever had) Sweet potato and duck croquette Raab tempura Endive salad Gigante beans Pork chop Dessert Were I to return and order individual items, I would not miss the focaccia, endive salad, and pork chop (although the beans were also a fave). I had to take home most of the beans and pork as I was quite full by those courses. They tasted great the next day. The chef was expediting in the open kitchen. My server was excellent and made a good wine recommendation. I felt welcomed (although a solo female diner) and pampered. Tables and chairs are minimal. Noise level was moderate. The place filled up on a Saturday evening, so get a reservation.

    The food and service was outstanding. We did the "kick back" option for two couples. It was fun, but some of the dishes, like desert, were only plated for three people rather than four which makes dividing awkward rather than relaxing. Since we're there for the food, that seemed odd. I don't know if I've ever been to a restaurant with more attentive service. Very frequent water refills and great explanations of the food. I think every dish was a combination of ingredients so counter intuitive (to an amateur like myself), yet when you eat it the flavors are so amazing you can't imagine the ingredients combined any other way! The quality of the cooking and plating was great too. The chef deserves a Michelin star! If you are a foodie, or aspire to be one, this restaurant will knock you out.

    Innovative menu with interesting flavors. We participated in the kick back menu where the chef chooses the menu. The sesame focaccia with koji butter, beans in Parmesan broth and lemon tart were our favorites. The pork chop was flavorful but had too much flavor competing in the dish. Had the chanterelle rye cocktail, but the flavors were overly busy and the chanterelle flavor was masked. Difficult to find a beverage that piqued our interest.

    We have enjoyed McMinnville's food scene for many years, but had never gone to Hayward. I tell you what, it's a new favorite! What a fun location and the FOOD!!! We had the "Kickback" Chef's choice menu, and it was amazing. Honestly, there was nothing bad. The other aspect was the service. Everyone worked together to make the dinning experience top notch! Do yourself a favor and make the reservation and go see for yourself!
