Why they're an Icon

Executive chef: Peter Cho

From the OpenTable editors: Han Oak has been a smash hit with critics from GQ and Portland Monthly since it opened in 2017, thanks to James Beard Award-nominated chef Peter Cho’s shareable Korean tasting menus. The feast starts with banchan—including Cho’s mom’s kimchi—and moves through heaping platters of bulgogi and koji-cured coppa before ending with bingsoo (shaved ice) and, if you're lucky, boisterous late-night karaoke.

Amazing meal with friends. Our second time to Han Oak. And was as great as the first time. Delicious and creative food. Attentive service and fun atmosphere without being too loud.

The hot pot dinner was very delicious and it was nice to have the set dinner where everything but the drinks were decided for us. The portions were spot on; we felt perfectly full. The caramelized custard was so creamy, with a lovely citrus jelly. Staff was very friendly, though we felt we may have been forgotten a time or two. Highly recommend! (They can’t accommodate a vegan meal though mindful of food allergies.)

It was good but portion was small for the price. I expected more for the price that I paid but it wasn’t bad we liked the food

Our favorite restaurant in Portland. The people working there are genuine, the space is cool but quirky, the food is always thoughtful and thought out. It all adds up. It’s hard to eat food this good in an unpretentious atmosphere.

Excellent one off menu, beautifully prepared and paced with unobtrusive but attentive staff. Music was loud enough to enjoy but able to converse over, and kept other conversations from being noticeable. Every space had a pair of speakers so you were getting all of the music and not just one channel, and I really appreciate that as it's distracting to me. Everything about dining there is so well thought out. Looking forward to returning for hot pot sometime and visiting jeju as well.

Overall we enjoyed ourselves. The appetizers especially the homemade kimchi was delicious. I’d pass on the raw fish for the hot pot - it was easily lost in the pot with the chopsticks. Service was spot on. The veggie selection got the hot pot was perfect!

Went at opening, 5, on a cold day the entire “space“ was warm despite being chilly and wet outside. There was a lawn in the center of the dining area that was blocked off by transparent plastic veil that felt like an art piece. Given a set course made ordering very simple. I added their babysitter mocktail, which was very good. Their ice cube was nice and clear. The meat quality was good as well. I like the age beef and the pork shoulders. The stock was flavorful although much less saltier than most hot pot broths I’ve had which had the benefit of allowing the flavors of the various ingredients to come through. The Bonchon itself was practically a course with high-quality versions of your typical offerings. my favorite was the eggplant fried. I think the kimchi had too much daikon. The sauces were good and helped enhance flavor when I had enough of the mild broth. The tallow chili oil was also very helpful and had a good spice to it. my significant other who does not eat spice said it was very spicy.

Best of Portland! Amazing food, fantastic drinks (including the best mocktail I’ve ever had), fabulous service (thank you, Ness and team!), fun setting— what’s not to love? Han Oak was the saving grace of our dining experience during our stay.

I recently visited Han Oak with high hopes, but unfortunately, the experience was disappointing. For $59 per person, we were given a pre-determined menu for three people. The waitress added our food to a shared pot, which seemed like a great concept—except not all of us wanted the same things. For example, the seafood portion was ridiculously small: just one scallop cut into thirds, a few shrimp, and some fish balls. We ordered the meat dumplings, but again very lacking in flavor. The 15-hour bone broth was incredibly bland, and there were no real sauce options to enhance the flavor. No spices, no spicy sauces—nothing but a few bland sauce options. A meal like this should have at least a few ways to customize the flavor, but very little was offered. The cuts of meat all tasted the same, and there was little variety to the dishes. To top it off, a dessert was included in the menu, but they only brought two out, even though we paid for three dinners. The waiter quickly said, "Here are two to share," and walked away before I could ask for a third dessert for my grandson. Three dinners should mean three desserts. It's frustrating to feel like you're not getting what you paid for, especially when it comes to something as basic as dessert. Overall, it was a disappointing experience, and I don’t think we’ll be returning. The atmosphere at this restaurant is truly something special though. From the moment you walk in, you're greeted by a warm, inviting vibe that feels both modern and relaxed. The dim lighting creates an intimate setting. There's a subtle hum of conversation, but it's never too loud, creating a nice balance between energy and relaxation. The music playing in the background is a little loud but ok. It’s the kind of place yo where you can easily lose track of time-in conversation if the food could match the vibe.
