We had another exceptional experience at Graylyn. What a gem! The food was delicious. We enjoyed a cup of coffee after dinner in the library to top off the evening.

Unfortunately I don't have much to say about our experience at the Graylyn Restaurant that is complimentary. I will start off with commenting that our waitstaff, including the bread/water waiter was perfectly fine. They were polite and attentive so no problems there. The food -- and drinks -- however, were abysmal. I won't go into all the details of just how bad the food was but feel compelled to let the restaurant know that this meal was absolutely not normal. Raw dough being passed off as "dumplings," everyday white rice being passed off as "risotto." Butternut squash uncooked. A salad that was supposed to feature fried artichokes with not one single artichoke. A cocktail with "sunset" in the title that was supposed to contain grenadine and oj coming completely clear and with a sprig of thyme. The manager did comp all of the meals as they were inedible so that was appreciated and certainly the right thing to do so I don't fault his service. But something absolutely *must* be done about the chef and food. The Graylyn Inn/Hotel is beautiful. Top notch rooms and service with a lovely vibe but this restaurant gives it a bad name.

The service was very good. The tomato bisque was excellent but a bowl is like getting a cup of soup - very small. The entree - scallops with butternut risotto - was not good. The risotto was mushy rice and the flavor was bland and it was lukewarm. Dessert was good. Did not appreciate a surprise surcharge of 22% and was told it was to help pay wages of $15/hr for all staff and was not a tip so we felt compelled to add another 20% for a tip, making the total extra charge 42%. We felt this was over the top especially given the lack of quality food.

When you're paying premium prices, you expect top-notch quality. My filet mignonettes were supposed to be medium rare but arrived well done. That said, the flavor was fantastic—if they'd been cooked right, they would've been exceptional. The ravioli I ordered was good, and my wife’s salmon was cooked perfectly. However, the sides were disappointing—the three thin slivers of carrots were undercooked and felt like a joke. Portion sizes overall left a lot to be desired. For the price, the experience fell short of expectations.

Our stay at the Graylyn Estate was terrific, but our dinner did not live up to the high quality of the inn. Most disappointing was the service. This was the worst service we can remember— and we eat out about once a week The problems began when they brought my husband’s glass of Cabernet ice cold, out of the refrigerator, and the waitperson seemed surprised when we told her that normally red wines are served at room temperature. The meal continued with a series of gaffes that now seem comical, and that ended when they brought my husband a fork to eat his crème brûlée. It was difficult to relax and enjoy our meal when we felt so uncomfortable with the service. I was there celebrating a milestone birthday and the bill came to over $200. We did expect more at this price point for a special occasion meal

I hate writing this one as we stayed at GRAYLYN and loved every minute of the stay and the accomodations but the dining room was a substantial dissapointment. If we went back we would not eat there. Service was fine but food and presentation was below average for price. Dishes were cooked to proper temp but sides were cold or undercooked. Sauces on dishes seemed off (like they had been sittng for a long time) and we shared GF choc torte for desert and it seemed almost stale/dry and was literally 3 bites. The basement GRILLE however was a wonderful stop for a cocktail and the food being served in there looked delicious. I am not sure if because there were so many events the night we ate in dining room if effected quality. I should also mention breakfast in the dining room was a MUCH better experience. NOTE: 22% service charge added to your check so make sure to keep an eye out for that, we almost added tip.

Dinner at Graylyn? The setting is beautiful and stately, the service is very attentive, the food is well presented (ie, food art), and the entrees were delicious. Now for the constructive criticism: the entree options on the menu are limited, and the portions of the entrees, while delicious, are small for almost $50 each. And, the room volume is not energetic, it's LOUD! What Open Table also doesn't tell you is that Graylyn charges a 22% service charge, which is non-negotiable, with the option of an additional amount for the waiter's tip. So, overall, delicious entrees, but a loud and not the more-intimate setting that we have experienced in another room there in the past. For the prices at Graylyn, one can have a larger delicious dinner with h'orderves and a desert at Jeffrey Adams on Fourth, or at the Cardinal hotel. or other fine dining sites in Winston-Salem.
