   I’ve heard many good things about Gershwins but my visit wasn’t very pleasant, wait staff was very disrespectful to my friend about his age, and when verified 3 different occasions he insisted to make jokes about it, food seemed to take alittle long to come out, food was good just long wait time and restaurant was not busy.

   Understanding it was New Years Eve and we did have reservation’s. We get there and are being seated and then told our table was given to somebody else and to have a seat at the bar and they will be back to seat us. With this said, we did arrive 10 mins before our reservation. We waited at the bar for 10 mins and I went to ask what was going on. I was told we were now sitting at the bar. I explained we had reservations and would like a table. Table was set up by the door in front of the piano. Needless to say it was loud and we couldn’t hear each other. Fast fwd to appitizers, I got mine which was room temp and my husband didn’t get his soup till 20 mins later and it had clearly just been warmed up in the microwave. We waited for an hr from the time we ordered our main course and never did get it. We ended up just paying for what we had gotten and left. Sadly we were not the only table this happened to. The table next to us never got their main course either and left. This is really sad because in the past we have had a great experience.

   My husband and I decided to celebrate our anniversary here this year. Our reservation was at 6:30 New Years Eve, so it was still early enough to beat the crowds. We were seated right away and placed drink orders. My husband is a bourbon lover and appreciated their exhaustive list of options. I tried three different cocktails and all were very good. The crab Mac and cheese was great. I ordered the French onion soup and Caesar salad and my husband ordered the glazed short ribs. He said his meal was good, but nothing to write home about. The French onion soup was just okay. The Caesar salad was amazing (aside from the seemingly store bought croutons.. dressing from scratch deserves croutons from scratch!) We wanted creme brûlée for dessert, but our server said they had not had it for awhile.. Service was generally slow, but we just took it as we were not being rushed. Our table was insanely wobbly and my husband kept his foot under the table leg to stabilize it for our time here. I noticed (after booking our reservation) several reviews note that a bottle of champagne was provided to other diners for their anniversaries or birthdays.. I do not book anywhere based on how a restaurant celebrates an occasion, but felt it should be noted that the staff did not even acknowledge we were celebrating something (it was listed on our reservation as well as in the notes). Our table candle had gone out and a staff member asked if we would like him to re-light it. I had just joked with my husband that our fire went out on our anniversary and shared that with the staff member. He wished us a happy anniversary while he lit the candle, but that was the only instance our anniversary was acknowledged. Again, I don’t book a reservation based on celebrations, but I am curious how they determine who they celebrate.. Overall, we agreed that we would probably return to sit at the bar and enjoy the piano. It was certainly not worth the $200+ cost and left us sorely disappointed.

   I had high expectations after reading reviews of online. I was excited to try the cocktails, appetizers and entrees. Our server was very nice and after being seated she took our drink order and gave us the drink specials for the night. My husband ordered the smoked old fashioned and I ordered the French 75. I really liked how their cocktail menu was listed by the era it was created/popular in. My husbands old fashioned arrived without the smoke or fanfare and when I mentioned it to him in front of the server she didn’t say anything or apologize. My drink was fine. We then both ordered appetizers and entrees. I ordered the French onion soup and he ordered the crab macaroni and cheese. The next item brought to our table was our entrees, no appetizers! I mentioned that we hadn’t received our appetizers yet and the server said she would check on them. For dinner I had the pork chop and he had the beef short ribs. In my opinion both were overdone. My pork was dry and a bit rubbery. His was dry but still had a nice flavor. Honestly, my favorite was the cooked broccoli with garlic which had to be subbed since the kitchen was out of collard greens. I did have a second cocktail which was the holiday sangria. It was just okay, nothing to write home about, highly clove spiced with one orange slice. Our server did come back to say that it was her fault the kitchen didn’t get the appetizer order and did we still want it. I really did want to try the soup so said yes I’ll have the soup. My husband said he didn’t need the macaroni and cheese. The server said it would take another 10-15 minutes which I said was fine. The appetizers were out within five minutes steaming hot so I’m not sure why she said it would take so long. The macaroni and cheese came out too which we had said we didn’t want but my husband went ahead and tried since it was brought out. Again, the food was okay but the bread in the French onion soup was burnt on the edges. Overall I don’t think we’ll be back.

   We were scheduled to have dinner at 8 we showed up a couple of minutes late and we were still asked to wait because our table was being set up. But just standing infront of the door when it’s cold and people are coming in and out was not it. We get seated at our table the 2 seat table closest to the wall in the piano area and it’s unstable wobbling really bad. We asked our sever if they could do something about it and very accommodating was able to fold a napkins to make us a table stopper. Very unusual for a place I know I’m about to spend a bit on. The live music was wonderful, the pianist selection of songs was good. If you want conversation during a meal and you’re not a person the wants to speak loud do not sit in the music area. We got Sangrias to drink they were delicious. We tried getting their charcuterie board but they were out so the server suggested the crab dip it was good. We got Caesar Salads and it wasn’t that good, too much dressing. The dressing itself was not your original. For our entree I wanted the Mahi Mahi but they were also out so the server suggested the salmon (medium) we got our dishes and my salmon was slightly overcooked not enough to return because the food was taking long to come out it’s a Saturday night and they were busy but it was season well. Finally the dessert, we asked for their chocolate cake it screamed store bought, it was hard from sitting in a chill box and we were not impressed. We believe maybe if we sit in a different area and reserve a seating for an earlier time we’ll have a better experience. The service definitely made the experience. It’s a nice looking restaurant overall.

   Really enjoyed live piano by Jana Ross! Server Justin is excellent. Conveniently, he explained the time to prepare entrees and that helped us select from the menu so we could get to a show on time. We left exactly when we expected. This is a great place for a leisurely meal and conversation. It's not a spot for a quick bite. It's to savor the moment. Ambiance is amazing. Take time to look around at all the vintage details. How often have you been rushed through a meal - taking your plate before you're done? Enjoy your visit here. One heads-up - there is an added service charge of 18% that I assume was the required tip. At the bottom of the receipt is space for "additional tip." Lest I forget, yes desserts are very good. Cocktail menu alcohol and non is creative, clever, vintage and modern.

   Server shiukdnt have been left alone on het second day at all. 1. Told my aunt vegetable was carrots, not spinach which she couldn't eat . 2. My friend asked for her appetizers to be delivered with our meals no they didn't happen . 3. My friend was half through her meal when my auntt and I got our meals. 4. Asked for light sauce my fish came out looking like dog food. 5. I have left numerous messages heard nothing back

    Food was excellent in this old Norfolk classic restaurant. The pumpkin soup and pumpkin pie were divine. The entrees were nicely prepared. We ordered house cocktails and wine which were reasonably priced and appropriately decanted. However, the evening went significantly longer than expected due to delays in service, limited/unavailable choices on the menu. Our waiter had a sense of humor but was clearly challenged to account for the hangups. There was a pianist at the front of the restaurant, but we only heard him while entering and leaving due to the long narrow dining room. We had a very cold drafty table seated next to the back wall which is entirely floor to ceiling windows for our delayed meal. In the future, we would ask to be seated more centrally and choose earlier serving times to ensure better menu selection. This is likely to be sound advice for any restaurant but seems especially true for Gershwins.
