An average steak with average garnish. Good service.
    GeesResponded 2 days ago
Thank you for your review; I do sincerely apologise that the steak seemed just average, this is certainly not the usual standard we aim to achieve. We have passed on your feedback to our kitchen team and will revaluate our suppliers stock. Nevertheless, I am delighted to see that you enjoyed your service and we hope to welcome you back for a much more enjoyable experience. Kind Regards, Roxy - Restaurant Manager

The setting is gorgeous. So beautiful and well put together. The service was excellent. The food was a little underwhelming given its reputation. The toast was so overdone as to be nearly inedible which meant my dish was essentially a ball of cheese with some avacado. That said the flavours were lovely.

I ended up going on my own after the Keble College Christmas concert! My friend pulled out due to the weather. The staff looked after me well. The beetroot starter was delicious and I loved the monkfish main course. Superb glass of petit Chablis too. All in all a lovely evening despite being alone. Thank you Gees

We were a table of eight and everyone enjoyed the food they ordered. The service was very friendly. The parking information offered on the restaurant website was accurate and each couple found a parking space.

We could hardly hear each other talk. There are at least 8 more covers than when the restaurant was owned by Jeremy. For our second order of white wine, we were charged for a whole bottle rather than a half bottle - only noticed when we got home. The standard and range of food has significantly declined over the years.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this informative and constructive review of your recent experience with us. I sincerely apologise for the error in wine charges and we will absolutely be available to refund this for you at your convenience. I appreciate that the conservatory can become quite loud when it is busy and would like to share that for any future visits, we do also benefit from the bar area tables that we have, and the terrace which offer the same menu but in a more peaceful setting. Thank you again for your information and I wish you a wonderful weekend. Kind Regards, Roxy - Restaurant Manager

It got off to a terrible start. The ‘front of house’ didn’t even grace a smile and did not make my daughter and I feel welcome. She appeared fed up and proceeded to take us to our table where she promptly through down the menus and left us. She did not share with us the specials such as the fish of the day. Honestly, I do not know how she is ‘front of house’ with her miserable attitude and it appeared to be with everyone and not just us. The staff member who finally took our order was efficient and only slightly better. The croquetas wee tasty but for 4 were very expensive at £11.50! The crispy squid was also more crispy than squid but the mayonnaise it was served with nice. In all nothing exceptional and poor value for the starters. The mains were a travesty. We order the duck ragu and the prawn spaghetti. The presentation was abysmal. There clearly was no pride in the playing as the contents were clearly thrown onto the plate. For both of us, the sauce had not been mixed with the pasta enough. For my duck was more on one side of the plate rather than tossed through as were my daughter’s prawns on her dish. The prawn dish was seasoned well and tasted nice but the duck was flavourless and poor quality and the pasta over cooked. We both left over half our mains. None of the wait staff came to ask if we were enjoying the food or ask us why we left so much when they took the plates away. They simply didn’t care. Of course, we chose not to have dessert. The previous courses and left has deflated and the service has dampened the experience and with the food being so expensive it wasn’t worth it. This was meant to be a special evening for my daughter and I which I had saved to be able to do. It wasn’t special in anyway. Unfortunately, I had to pay the bill and I paid the service at over £10 as I suffer from anxiety and I couldn’t face the confrontation. Automatic service charges should never be done for precisely this.

Thank you for taking the time to leave this informative review; I am extremely apologetic that your time with us was so unfortunate. This is certainly not a true reflection of our working ethos at all and I would like to ensure you that all matters of your review have been effectively communicated to each team member involved to avoid any future occurrences such as this. If you may kindly contact us at 01865 553540 we would be appreciative of the opportunity to rectify this for you. I wish you and your daughter a wonderful weekend and I hope to hear from you soon. Waiting staff were excellent and food was very good. I do find the acoustics very difficult in the main building. A few busy tables but not full but it’s very noisy.

Not a beat missed. Scallops, monkfish and cassoulet were first class. The negroamaro was especially good value, an absolutely delicious wine. Excellent service, as always.
