Hidden in plain sight, a step through an unassuming secret entrance within Craft & Commerce transports guests to False Idol’s faux tropical paradise complete with traditional Polynesian elements of fire & ice (including an indoor waterfall and flaming volcano). We enlisted a team of legendary tiki artists to fashion a fully immersive environment that pays tribute to the imagined “false idols” of mid-century American worship.

This place is legend for a reason! We were visiting from NYC where Paradise Lost is our regular. So, the tiki “bar” here is set REAL high. Decor slayed, drinks nearly did so to our following morning 🥴, the staff all friendly and accommodating. Matt, was our bartender for the first two hours (yes, we’re insane) then I believe was relieved by “Leo”? At this point, retention skills were baggy at best, nonetheless, that guy finished us off like a champion and we walked away with two bags full of mementos. (Friends of ours are at 800+ Tiki Mugs so they just got 3 more!) The only thing I’d change is the thermostat. It was freezing raining outside and equally chilly in the bar. Couldn’t take our jackets off inside. It’s tiki in CA….lets warm it up a notch. 😬 If we didn’t have house repairs starting on Monday, we’d extend another week. We learned that every single one of our favourite places in SD over the previous two days was owned by Consortium Holdings. If they were a cult, we’d gladly join. Looking into permanent residency at The Lafayette next! We cordially invite CH to NYC for a complete take over.

The bar is cool and the music was good. The service was decent. Our server at one point sat down at a table full of women and chatted for a bit while our drinks sat there empty and alone. Not a big deal because the drinks are good. The problem is that everything is small and waaayyyyy overpriced. Drinks were smal as were the portions. The place looks like a casual bar to watch the game or hang out with friends to get your evening started but it operates like a fancy restaurant.

Really fun place to check out. It's tucked away behind another bar. The deco is well done and the drinks are quite good! The staff is really nice and helpful.

Our wait person was Ellie, she was excellent. Friendly, personable & knowledgeable. Very much enjoyed her presence. The drinks are outstanding! The flavor profiles, visually & content of alcohol. Although the ambience is cool, it’s definitely the drinks & service that steal the show. It’s a small place, no food, make reservations. When you’re done, have some food at Craft & Commerce the food is worth it.
