Brian Dunsmoor’s namesake restaurant, Dunsmoor, is the latest iteration of his ongoing exploration of American heritage cooking. It is, first and foremost, a restaurant for the community that surrounds it, and a loving expression of the relentless research that has informed his cooking for the last ten years.

We offer the full menu at tables in our dining room and at the chef's counter, as well as at our outdoor tables. Reservations are recommended but we make every effort to accommodate walk-ins when possible.

Dunsmoor's wine bar, accessible either through the restaurant or via its own door on Ave 35, does not accept reservations and serves a limited menu of our raw and larder items.

Why they're an Icon

From the OpenTable editors: Few chefs can work a hearth like Brian Dunsmoor, who cut his teeth at Southern star Hatchet Hall before opening his namesake restaurant in 2022. The long tables adorned with flickering candles make the restaurant an ideal place for a date, as do fiery dishes like wood-roasted oysters and mushroom-crusted pork chops. The cornbread, slathered in cultured butter, is the stuff of dreams.

The quality, especially service, has diminished in the past year. I was a big fan when they opened, but in two recent visits, I was disappointed. On both occasions, the host was particularly unhelpful. Yesterday she was even ambivalent while we waited 25 minutes past our reservation time. She instructed us to wait in the bar, but there was no room in the bar. She seemed irritated with us as we stood instead at the entrance and waited for our table. The only alternative was to stand outside in the rain. When she finally seated us, there was no apology or acknowledgement. The service team does know the menu, but they are not coordinated between themselves. Multiple servers came to ask the same questions, and on a humorous note, the somm recommended a bottle of wine, but then apparently departed for the evening without telling our server which wine or what the price was (it eas off menu). When finished, one server cleared the empty bottle, then the other server came and asked if we could remember the name of the wine and the price so he could put it on the bill. One server also told us a story about a customer who was banned from the restaurant. While banter is banter, this is not a customer-friendly topic, kind of threatening. Also, why do servers show up at a table carrying dirty dishes from another table? That’s unappetizing and more like a diner than a restaurant with a $300 tab. James Beard winning chef Michael Solomonov spoke about his success by underlining the importance keeping one eye on the kitchen and one eye on the front of house. At Dunsmoor, no one is keeping an eye out on the front of house. I worry that the fact that it’s crowded only encourages the owners to believe that they’re doing fine when in reality the place already needs an overhaul. Fingers crossed. NELA needs good restaurants, and this one was promising until it wasn’t.

All I read was about how this place has amazing food and I can say all of what we ordered was just “ok.” The famous cornbread was missing something. The mushrooms were cold. The chive potatoes were good but also not that warm. The rib eye was nothing special. It wasn’t warm enough and the flavor was lacking. Overall I was disappointed in the food. It was also too loud. The service was good.

I have to say, Ive been to Dunsmoor only a few times, but it feels like it just keeps getting better and better and the restaurant and food were already incredible the first time. The service is always top notch and the atmosphere is a really great vibe. I can't say enough great things about Dunsmoor.

the food was absolutely great - could not ask for much better. The experience was marred by an obnoxious waiter (just one person - male with blond hair) who decided to be demeaning to the table. We had the oysters (great) and one of our table requested some vinegar - entirely a diners choice - when removing the vinegar, he chose to say "and how was the vinegar?". Unprofessional and from that point on we had terrible service from him. The other wait staff were delightful and took over our table. Particularly the sommelier
