In 1962, Johnny Harlowe made the jump from the silver screen to chef and owner of Dear John’s. Convinced by his pal Frank Sinatra, Johnny opened the iconic spot just a ways down from Sony Studios on Culver Blvd. It became the watering-hole for the Hollywood elite with Sinatra often in the corner playing the piano against the dark brick walls once lined with portraits of famous John’s. Seasoned chefs and entrepreneurs Hans Röckenwagner and Josiah Citrin have teamed up to re-open Dear John’s with an updated classic American menu and old-school cocktail list.

    The best extravagant New Year’s Eve dinner. Every dish was so delicious!!’ Drinks were perfect but I wish they were served in martini glasses not coupes. Sorry to leave- a great joyful feast.

    Always a fantastic meal with incredible service. Old school restaurant with a modern twist. Great martinis and the comfort classics are perfectly cooked. We will be back again next time we are in LA.

    Behind a gym, in what looks like a boarded up fast food restaurant, is a Culver City institution: Dear John’s. This is a steakhouse and cocktail lounge, with great sides. It’s really, really dark inside, but that’s part of the vibe. The steak was huge (I had the 18oz ribeye), perfectly grilled, and outstanding. Because it’s so small, it can be difficult to get a reservation on a Saturday, so book early. Closed on Sundays and Mondays.

    Excellent. I have been there 30 years ago and it was a delight to go again it was a very nice experience. Loved the sand dabs fish and they serve the best mash potatoes! The steak fries are to die for. My son said it was the best New York steak he ever had. He was turning 14 years old. He will always remember Dear John’s and his bday celebration. The cheese cake was delicious. And the wine list is exquisite. I just can’t wait to go back !

    The patio is terrible. I can't believe that we had to sit in such a utilitarian, noisy, and ugly space when we expected to enjoy a lovely and bustling atmosphere. Most restaurant patios at least feel related to the main rooms but not at Dear John's. I was disappointed and embarrassed that I chose this place for our visit with an out-of-town friend.

    Excellent Christmas Eve 4 course meal. Dark room, understate but distinctive holiday decorations, and traditional Dear John setting made for great ambience.

    consistently good service and food with experienced staff. cold night and we sat on patio but with the heaters is was comfortable and with an 8:00 reservation we were seated after the earlier rush so it was quiet.
