About this restaurant

  • Charming
  • Good for special occasions
  • Great for fine wines
Having spent years supplying London’s top restaurants through their separate wine businesses, Joe Haynes and Benedict Butterworth have joined forces with Tom Hurst, who has worked at Brawn, The Marksman, Levan, and most recently as Head Chef at Lasdun, to launch the trio’s first restaurant together.

Located in a Grade II listed building on Cloth Fair, Cloth Restaurant is part of a historic row of buildings in the City of London that survived the Great Fire of 1666. Down this atmospheric alley opposite St Bartholomew church, Cloth is taking over a double fronted corner site that’s beneath the former home of poet John Betjeman and next door to the two oldest residential buildings in London.

Inside, low ceilings, wood floorboards with antique wall lights and artwork create a cosy, intimate atmosphere, while marble tables, long dark wood banquettes, antique crockery and cutlery will create the feel of a classic bistro.

I have to say I had a wonderful time dining alone at Cloth. Upon entering the guests we seated and chatting over delicious looking plates of good. The room was warm and inviting an perfectly lit. I walked back by the bar and was immediately greeted by y a very hospitable youngish man who informed me my table was being set and would I mind waiting for a couple minutes. I was soon taken to my table which was ideally set for one. ( it didn’t look lonely at all ). Upon seating I met Charlie and he became to ask me questions about what types of wine I liked and immediately offered me a couple of ideas. Whilst I was looking over their extensive and beautifully designed list of wines Charlie asked if I would like to try a sparkling wine from Devonshire. Well, who am I to say no to a nice fizzy drink??!! I made my choices of what I was going to have to est and in what order. Charlie came back to the table and came up with 3 very nice whites for me to have either my meal. I started with the Iberico Jamon which was very good and a very generous portion. With I I had the Pierre-Yves Colin-Morey Bourgogne Blanc from Burgundy. I have to say it was the perfect pairing. Just the right amount of acid and full flavour to compliment the meat and and to cut through the fat. Next I had the mozzarella salad with artichokes and roasted peppers. Wow!! Not you typical mozzarelle salad and then the bitter greens in buttermilk dressing which was light snd refreshing which a hint of tang and spice. With these two I had the Celine Cote Blanc de Noir Pinot Noir. Yes, a white wine made from a red grape. It was perfection. I loved it. Light and fruity but full of body and character. For my main I had the Cavatelli pork rage with fennel sausage orange and rosemary. Amazing!! Simply delicious and a lovely spice that just tickles the palate. I lived it. And as my pairing I had another Blanc de Noir but not without trying the Lyrarakys Vidiano “Armi” from Crete Gr. Delicious! Loved

What can I say - it lived up to the reviews. The decor is warm and inviting, cosy and romantic. The food was delicious. The pollock crudo zingy and refreshing, the chicken liver parfait was beautifully light. We thoroughly enjoyed every course and delighted we left a little room for desert - recommended by the waiter as the best desert ever it dd not disappoint. Our waiter was friendly, attentive and helpful. It is a restaurant that I would go back to again and again (if it becomes easier to get a table).

Table service a bit off: bread appetiser did not arrive, the starters did! Had to ask for the bread. Had to ask for the glasses of white wine which were ordered at the time of the food and were meant to arrive when the aperitifs were finished. Asked for one dessert and two forks: two desserts arrived. Saving grace was the food-delicious

Lovely restaurant that blends a traditional building with a trendy feel to the space. The staff provided a very service and the food was cooked perfectly with a modern twist across their menu.

Lovely space with a great ambience and the staff were fantastic. The issue for me was the menu. I appreciate that this is a restaurant that regularly changes its menu. Having reviewed previous iterations, we were confident there would be something we’d look forward to eating. Unfortunately on the day we visited, there was not. Out of the 5 main courses available, 3 contained seafood and I don’t eat seafood (the ribeye came with a stew containing anchovies). There was then a vegetarian pasta or pigeon - and neither of these options really appealed. The waitress couldn’t have been nicer and said the kitchen could leave the anchovies out of the stew but I didn’t want to spend £40 on a dish where the flavour profile isn’t what the chefs intended. Instead, they did me a pork chop which was perfectly nice but I don’t think worked with the blood orange puree accompaniment. Additionally the portion size for the price was really very modest. Starters and pudding were good. However, I don’t think we’d return. The risk is you’re stuck with a limited menu you’re not keen on for pretty high prices. Staff were excellent though and we loved the space.

Lovely! Truly beautiful, if tight, space. Both the bartender and the waiter got our orders wrong, bit we had a lovely time.
