WELCOME TO CLOAK & PETAL!
Where we invite you to journey into a place of both intimacy and companionship
Our concept is drawn from our name. The word “cloak” implies secrecy, inspiring our concept of a social sphere humming beneath the levels of ordinary life. “Petal” alludes to the Japanese tradition of “hanami,” when family and friends gather under blooming cherry blossoms to savor food, drinks and fellowship.
Enter our space and travel underground to décor reminiscent of an abandoned Tokyo subway, a stratum of society all its own, an artist’s dream. Cross the threshold into a mystically transformed Japanese social dining lounge which appears to be an outdoor seating area, similar to a waiting platform. Sit beneath a trellis of draping vines and teardrop lights in the intimate space we’ve thoughtfully created, and feast on authentic Japanese sushi, appetizers, small plates and drinks with family and friends.

I come to Cloak & Petal every time I come to San Diego. The atmosphere is fun, the restaurant is beautiful and vibrant, and the food is fantastic. I like the gyoza and the saucy boi roll.

I usually don’t reviews and certainly not a negative form. I think the ambience was very nice and it would be a great date night. However, we felt a little abandoned in the back and attention to detail could’ve gone better.

My wife and I were really looking forward to dining here, but unfortunately, the experience didn’t live up to our expectations. We were seated at probably the worst table in the restaurant, but we didn’t mind too much at first. The real issue was the service—it took a long time just to get a server, and even longer for our food to arrive. The sushi was okay—not the best we’ve had, but not the worst either. I wouldn’t call it overpriced, especially considering you’re paying for the ambiance and overall experience. The problem was, that experience was lacking due to poor service and our less-than-ideal table. The one highlight was the busser—he was incredibly attentive and made sure our water glasses were always full, which we really appreciated.

This is your typical instagram hyped up restaurant. We were sat immediately & the employee who filled up our waters didn’t make eye contact or say anything- more like judgy looks. Our server was good but felt like we had to wave him down to actually order our dinner. He was very accommodating with my allergies which is much appreciated. The food was delicious. I loved the waygu on top of the roll. And the short ribs were amazing. The place was loud and the menu is slightly overwhelming, but the restaurant itself is gorgeous! The decor is beautiful and very “instagrammable”. I can see why lots of people go here.

Excellent specialty rolls, and service was perfect! Be forewarned the music is quite loud (7pm) and between that and the patrons trying to talk over it… very hard to have conversation. Still, worth the visit! Enjoyed it!!
