   This was the most disappointing vegetarian tasting menu I’ve ever experienced. The highlight of the meal was the sparkling water. The service was unprofessional—we received four different courses within ten minutes. The staff served two tasting menu dishes on shared plates without consulting us, explaining that’s their standard presentation. I find this unacceptable—how would they serve a party of more than four people? The waitress forgot we ordered the vegetarian tasting menu and gave us the dessert menu when we asked for dessert. The first dish, edamame, was flavorless and inconsistently salted. The Brussels sprouts had a weird, soggy texture. One of the rolls contained a hard ingredient that hurt my teeth. Overall, the seasoning was plain with an absurd sour and sweet taste. The corn ribs were overwhelmed by sauce that didn’t enhance the flavor. The dessert was okay. There was no special acknowledgment for our anniversary—not even a simple “Happy Anniversary.” My partner and I went elsewhere after this dinner to properly celebrate.

   Chotto Matte exceeded our expectations when we celebrated my wife’s birthday here with our 3-year-old. The vibrant atmosphere was matched by the amazing service from our waitress and the entire staff, who were incredibly accommodating. They made our evening special with thoughtful touches that went above and beyond. The food was fantastic, especially the sato maki rolls, crispy spicy tuna, yellow tail sashimi and salt pepper squid. Flavor bomb! Perfect spot for a special occasion, with a team that truly cares about making it memorable.

   I love the food here, and the setting with the outdoor seating arrangements is unique for this part of town. This particular occasion the timing was off and we were served (late in relation to all of my food which I had already finished) a roll we did not order. Unwittingly my partner ate the un-ordered roll not knowing it was different from what he had ordered. Later, as we were ready to leave, the actual roll he ordered arrived! He ate that too, but this further dragged out the whole process and I had long since finished my dinner. They were apologetic, but it doesn't reflect well on the place. The more awkward issue is that I had finished my meal even by the time his mistaken roll arrived. Perhaps they thought we were sharing everything, but maybe that sort of thing should be asked? I had indicated at the outset that I do not eat fish or seafood, so that should have suggested that the items I ordered were just for me and the items he ordered were just for him. Not a big deal, but it made an impression. The place has a bit of a cheesy nightclub vibe (think Night at the Roxbury but with the now obligatory selfie station in the front), but you can ignore that if you sit outdoors and at a remove from the interior music and bar / lounge areas. It has an ample space, the menu has a lot of variety, and the staff are friendly. Perhaps its biggest draw is that it is one of the only SF restaurants at present that are OPEN LATE, and for that alone I am willing to look past a few glitches here and there. This is a good option if you have an event preceding dinner or just want to eat dinner late, and I hope more places will start following its late night lead. My one caveat is that if you are driving and planning to park nearby, the Union Square garage is not open as late as this restaurant, so you'd need to use the slightly further away Stockton Sutter garage.

   Fancy but done well. The food was pretty good but had some things that could have been improved upon. The lighting was dark yet romantic.

   Hi! I've been to your restaurant a few times before this one and it was always all-around 5 stars. This time the food and service was great from our server + the chef/chef's team which is wonderful. However, the cocktails took a very long time to arrive at our table. The first wave of food arrived before the cocktails. Also, we were placed under a speaker and it was incredibly loud. And this is coming from someone who loves music and a good vibe. Next time it would be great to be sat away from the DJ booth and closer to the windows in the dining room.

    Unfortunately, what was supposed to be a pleasant dining experience was ruined due to significant delays and poor service. We ordered four cocktails as soon as we were seated, that never arrived. In addition, we had to cancel one of our appetizers because it hadn’t arrived by the time we asked for the check. Our server was courteous and apologetic, and mentioned that the manager would be over to address the issue, but unfortunately, the manager only showed up when we were ready to leave. His attempt at a resolution felt insincere, as he offered to remove three appetizers from the bill, which did not seem like a meaningful gesture. After paying, another manager came over and kindly offered to take care of the entire bill, which we appreciated, but by then, the damage had been done. I had an out of town visitor and it was my first-time experience at Chotto Matte which was completely ruined, and we left feeling frustrated rather than satisfied.
