The last of its kind near 42nd Street, Chez Josephine is a neighborhood gem founded in 1986 by Jean-Claude Baker as a tribute to legendary Josephine Baker. This Parisian bistro offers live piano music and a tantalizing menu in an intimate setting of red velvet walls, a cavalcade of chandeliers and a blue-tin ceiling. Guests receive a warm welcoming and are treated as family whether coming before a show, after the show, for a leisurely dinner in-between, or a drink at the zinc bar.

Chez Josephine draws a crowd unlike any other in New York as food critic Bryan Miller noted when he wrote: “The dining room is a confluence of the famous and the fashionable, the infamous and unsung – with every shade of skin on earth – and indeed you feel the magic of Chez Josephine.”

    His restaurant is an outstanding value in the Theater district. Great service, very good food, and open after the Theater. And the price is very reasonable. Love it.

    Good location. Pleasant atmosphere and decor. Friendly and attentive service. Prices are reasonable. One person really enjoyed the escargot and the fruit sorbet. Others were underwhelmed with the crab. The croque madame was served barely lukewarm and the cheese was not melted, bread was non-descript. The lava cakes were served cold (UGH). Maybe we'll give it another try. Maybe not.

    Chez Josephine has been one of our favorite Manhattan restaurants for many years. This time we dined late, and the restaurant was very quiet, though even when it's been busy, it's always possible to hear over the energetic background. After splitting an excellent crab cake, our main courses were the roast duck breast and the rack of lamb. Both were absolutely outstanding, as were the cocktails. Chez Josephine has my personal guarantee: If you're not completely satisfied with the food, call me and I'll come down and eat it for you.

    We had a pre-show dinner and the food was wonderful as always. We gad to wait a bit to be seated for our reservation but still had coffee after dinner and got to our show on time. Good service and nice live piano!

    This restaurant always has a nice wine selection and excellent food. However, we dined there on a Saturday and our reservation was pre-show time at 5:30. Our veal chops were medium well and not medium rare. I think the kitchen was just rushing to get meals out so that people could get to their show, and weren’t paying attention to details. I would still go back though.

    Service was ok; waiter seemed disinterested. we were only ones in the restaurant other than another couple. The food was mostly lackluster for the price. The bread was very good as was the soup.
