The Illicit Cask*GBP 8.00
Whisky & Chocolate Mousse. Did You Know? In 1781, making whisky for private consumption in Scotland was banned and the industry was immediately driven underground – sometimes literally – with illicit stills appearing across Scotland in remote locations, including in marshland, streams and even hidden in coffins! Finally, in 1823, the Government decided to allow distilling in return for a license fee. This turned the production of whisky into a potentially profitable activity, and many former illicit distillers – notably George Smith, who founded Glenlivet – went "straight". This was the start of the industry booming into what it is today
