Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 7 days a week.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    Due to this year’s Valentine’s Day falling on a Friday, the team at Ukiah didn’t want you to fret about snagging your table to celebrate your special one. The team will be running their “lover’s specials’ all weekend long. Chef Michael Lewis and Ian O’Shaughnessy have created a special tasting menu offered Friday through Sunday to share at the table, perfect for your group. The menu will feature dishes such as Salmon Crispy Rice and Smoked Trout Roe, Watercress Salad with Roasted Beets, Miso Mustard and Nori and Skirt Steak with Crispy Onions and Buttery Truffle. Don’t want to commit to the full tasting experience, don’t worry! We will be offering the full a la carte menu, as well as seats at the bar for those last-minute guests.

Chef Michael Lewis & Ian O’Shaughnessy have created a special tasting menu for $38.00pp. Salmon Sashimi, wasabi soy broth + scallions Veggie Gyoza, truffle ponzu Crispy Rock Shrimp chili butter + gorgonzola Iceberg Wedge, sesame dressing, nashi pear + nori Smoked Carolina Pork Shoulder + kyoto-carolina BBQ Seasonal Veggies Chefs Dessert Please note, all the following dishes will be served family style, to the center of the table, perfectly portioned for your group to share. Dishes may not come out in the following order. Please note, the full table must order the menu and no substitutions may be made.

    Food selection and flavors were excellent and Christopher is one of the best servers I’ve ever had the pleasure to work with. His knowledge, timing, manners and attention to detail was superb!

    Fantastic different food. Worth the price. Tempura mushrooms, and coconut cake, not to be missed. Service off a bit from impeccable but still good. Parking can be a problem. All is worth it for the food, drinks and experience.

    I really love Ukiah. I’m going back next week to celebrate my birthday. They had a fabulous test drink with local gin and my favorites- the beech mushroom and ribs! Do yourself a favor and check it out!!!

    It was our pleasure to assist them during their recovery, although the experience wasn't quite as positive as it once was. Their beverages and sauces, however, were truly exceptional. The waitstaff could benefit from improved friendliness and attentiveness. We enjoyed the Ukiah Oldie and Mochigome. The Old Fashioned was beautifully presented, and the Mochigome was delicious, though the second serving showed some inconsistency. We sampled the shishito peppers with carrot ginger ponzu sauce, pork tonkotsu, crispy pork Thai basil, and salmon sashimi. The crispy pork was particularly noteworthy, while the other dishes were quite satisfactory.
