Welcome to Ukiah Japanese Smokehouse, where Japanese Soul Food meets American BBQ by James Beard Nominated Chef Michael Lewis. “Japanese Smokehouse” is defined as merging Japanese ingredients and flavors with American BBQ techniques, and everything in between.

Menu highlights include light and refreshing dishes such as Wagyu Tataki with house kimchee, yuzu kosho and savory soy or Tuna Takaki with fire roasted peppers + ponzu, to bolder flavors such as Smoked Pastrami Short Rib with toasted rye, fire roasted kimchi + yuzu pickles. We are currently open 5 days a week for Dinner as we navigate after Hurricane Helene.

Please note, our dining room consists of booths, regular tables and high-tops. We will try our best to accommodate you at your prefer location, but sometimes it is not possible due to party size. Our outdoor tables can be requested but not guaranteed when booking on open table.

    This year, we all deserve double the fun, so Asheville Restaurant Week returns for TWO weeks, January 21-27 & February 18-24! Chef Michael Lewis & Ian O’Shaughnessy have created a special tasting menu for $38.00pp. Salmon Sashimi, wasabi soy broth + scallions Veggie Gyoza, truffle ponzu Crispy Rock Shrimp chili butter + gorgonzola Iceberg Wedge, sesame dressing, nashi pear + nori Smoked Carolina Pork Shoulder + kyoto-carolina BBQ Seasonal Veggies Chefs Dessert Please note, all the following dishes will be served family style, to the center of the table, perfectly portioned for your group to share. Dishes may not come out in the following order. Please note, the full table must order the menu and no substitutions may be made.

    We did the chef’s table and everything was absolutely delicious. The brisket was the tenderest I have ever had and just melted in your mouth. We will be back!

    The staff was so kind and understanding of our groups poor time management and us not having our full group at our scheduled time. The food was beyond delicious, I could eat the Beech mushroom tempura everyday. We were there for our friends Birthday they surprised her with a bday candles in the dessert and it was a great touch to a perfect dinner.

    Our server was over worked , did not have time to take care of us. We were told the kitchen was “free flowing” which meant that dishes came out at different times. I received my plate 45 minutes before my husband was served. It’s overpriced and not worth going back.

    An anniversary to remember at Ukiah. Food was over the top in taste and appearance. Tremendous restaurant experience. Christopher was attentive and all staff made everyone feel great. What a wonderful restaurant.

    Incredible experience. Alex was our server and he made wonderful recommendations. Highlights include the tuna tataki and the gyoza. Will definitely be back!

    We'd been to Ukiah before, but the New Year's Day brunch exceeded every expectation. As we strolled toward the building, the mouthwatering aroma of smoked meats beckoned us in. The song playing on the outdoor speaker was one that I knew and liked - things were looking good! We were greeted by a friendly host and promptly taken to our table. Our server, Alex, was friendly and knowledgeable, and he quickly informed us that a couple of menu items weren't available (yet). This was helpful to our decision about what to order. The Java the Hutt caffeinated cocktail was PHENOMENAL. We ordered food off the special menu - the collard greens were the best I've ever eaten (I'm from the South). They were swimming in bacon vinaigrette and loaded with bacon pieces & smoky pulled pork. The breakfast ramen and bananas foster French toast were absolutely delicious, too. We enjoyed every moment and every bite of this experience! Prices are reasonable and portions were generous. Nice upscale rustic atmosphere, the music wasn't too loud, and the playlist could have been pulled directly from my Spotify account. Perfect all around!
