About this restaurant

  • Good for business meals
  • Good for special occasions
  • Good for groups
Step into Brutto Americano, a hidden gem within The Barnett in the lively heart of downtown New Orleans. Chef Brian Burns reimagines Italian classics with a fresh, contemporary twist, highlighting handmade pasta and the finest local seafood. The wine list draws heavily from the Italian peninsula and offers a curated selection of small growers from the American West Coast. The cocktail menu channels the elegance of Milan and Rome’s legendary bars, blending tradition with innovation.
The name Brutto Americano, which translates to "Ugly American," is an irreverent nod to both the lavishness of the restaurant’s stunning physical space and the kitchen’s bold, unapologetic approach to reimagining classic Italian dishes. At Brutto, the team pushes boundaries while staying rooted in tradition, creating an experience that’s as unexpected as it is unforgettable.

We had three different pastas at our table so that each of us could sample the others, and they were all great. My favorite was the pappardelle, but we also enjoyed the Rigatoni alla Vodka, which had a little kick to it. Tasty Panna Cotta for dessert. Service was very attentive, and it’s a beautiful space that made for a delicious meal and an enjoyable overall experience.

Excellent experience from beginning (charming hostesses) to end. The food was delicious, particularly the steak tartare, the roasted oysters, the crab pasta, and the scallops. And our waiter, Armando, was superb. We plan to return soon.

The Radicchio - Butter Lettuce Salad was exceptional. The Pasta dishes are creative. Extensive wine list. A few growing pains for a new restaurant but on the right track.

Charming and seductive atmosphere- doesn’t look like anything changed since it was owned by the Ace Hotel. Slow service. Delicious wine. Not enough anchovy on the focaccia. Delectable pasta- recommend both the bolganese and the tagliatelle with prosciutto.

When the hostess is too engrossed in reading her book to greet your party or give you a nice table (in an empty room), you know you’re in trouble. We read the glowing reviews. We were ready for a fine and festive evening. But the cold, dark room and inexperienced wait staff could not make up for good food. We ate quickly, all in a major hurry to leave.

Service was exceptional. Server explained everything and was attentive to our questions. The service team was polite and courteous. Food was very good. Restaurant back of the house is still getting kinks out of their new restaurant. While execution was slow, we were in no rush and had an enjoyable evening

The lunch we had was amazing. Morgan and Opi were wonderful with recommendations and attention. They didn’t “hurry” us in any way and we were able to enjoy and incredible meal. Highly recommend this restaurant.

We started with the caesar salad with oysters and the focaccia. The romaine was steamed and slimy, the oysters were fried but not crispy. It was not a pleasant dish. The bread had a great texture but was overly salty. My husband had the skirt steak and I had the pappardelle. The steak and potatoes were ok, the pasta was more uncooked than al dente and was barely warm. The service was excruciating slow to the point that they comped our entrees. The restaurant was not full and there were servers and manager everywhere. Between the quality of the food and the poor, slow service, I do not recommend.

The servers were great! Very friendly and enthusiastic. The food was meh. Nothing outstanding and kind of bland. We tried 3 pastas, the Burrata appetizer and oysters. I wouldn’t order them again but the ambiance was nice. Prices were moderately high. .

The food was amazing. Their own salad had a delicious vinegrette. The tapenade in the chicken was outstanding. The prosciutto Parmesan pasta was wonderful. The restaurant is 6 blocks outside the French Quarter - well worth the short walk.
