Basil is the realization of the lifelong dream of Henry and Chai Eang, brothers who immigrated to the United States from turbulent 1970s Cambodia. From speaking not a word of English, to creating award-winning dining experiences throughout the Carolinas, the duo has married hard work with passion to bring authentic Thai cuisine to their new home.

Since opening the first Basil in Charleston to rave reviews, several trendy locations have followed over the last dozen years. We have eaten here in the past and it's been relatively good. Last night - not so much. After getting us some water our server disappeared for about 10 minutes - when she got back to our table she made some reference to a lost order or delivery person - hmmm - we weren't lost - we were abandoned at our table. The chicken satay we ordered was good. But the main dishes, a curry and seafood dish were just bad or mediocre. The seafood dish was overcooked. The jasmine rice was delivered to our table about 10 minutes before our dishes showed up and was cold and hard (undercooked?). The green curry was mostly broth. And lastly, when paying the bill, the server rang us up on the credit card device, handed it to my wife to finish processing and then promptly left. We had to wait another 5 minutes before she returned to pick up the device and get us a receipt. A person can only take so much abuse before you just say "never again".

As Greenville newbies we are working our way through the area's dining landscape. We've been lucky enough to dine all over the globe and readily available and plentiful high quality cuisine driven foodie havens is a prerequisite for where we finally settle. We have definitely found an area that continues to surprise with flair and authenticity. Thx Basil for standing up to this highly competitive community of quality cuisine. We really enjoyed our dinner. Wonton soup cured everything, Pad Thai was fresh and sauced on point, super hot fresh egg rolls done right, and fried rice that was complimentary. We will be back to try some more items.... Cliff

On this cold sunny day we had the perfect soups Served by a friendly and good server. I did not know they had lunch service and am so glad I know now.

The food was excellent (could taste all flavor notes) and our server was great. Added bonus is the restaurant is dog friendly so our pups came in with us.
