Enjoy award-winning Balgownie wine right from the source, where our wine-making legacy first began back in 1969 with the planting of the first 5 acres of Shiraz and Cabernet Sauvignon in Bendigo.

Balgownie Estate is a 5-star Halliday-rated Winery. Bendigo features a new Cellar Door, open-air deck, and a charming regional restaurant.

The property is home to 70 acres of vineyards and winery plus modern homestead, and glamping accommodation.

Winemaker Tony Winspear has been nurturing the Estate’s grapevines from bud to bottle since 1994, a hands-on winemaker, and very much at home in the cellar using traditional low intervention techniques.

Our Grazing Menu is served from Monday to Friday in our Cellar Door Space or on the deck, Dinner is served Thursday to Tuesday in the Restaurant space or on the deck.

We had the French Cheese & Balgownie Wine Flight. Brilliant service - Michael was very informative and answered all our wine questions. The wine was delicious and paired so well with the cheese. Great views & ambient spot. Highly recommend!

Booked for a French wine & cheese flight . Wine pour was way under the flight norm of 60 ml, 4 wines ,( research says 4-6 wines is the norm) no information about the wines, no interaction from the staff, even though we tried to engage him, the cheese came with no accompaniment, asked for crackers & didn’t even get two each ! Extremely poor value for money .

A lovely matched wine & cheese session with a small group of friends. Balgownies were very accommodating fitting extra people into our booking. Thanks for a lovely experience!

Balgownie is a beautiful little winery which is very picturesque in Autumn especially. We have been here a number of times and eaten in the restaurant as well as at the Cellar door. We've also attended the festival in Autumn and received great deals on some very pleasant wines. This particular occasion was the French inspired cheese and Balgownie wine flight experience which was good value for $30 we thought. (50mls each of: Black Label Pinot Gris, Nouveau Rose, Nouveau Syrah & Limited-Edition Cabernet Franc served with four paired cheese's) The only downside for us was the confusion over our booking (they couldn't find it in the system) and hence a bit of a scramble to get us seated and organised with the cheese boards and wines which they did do with efficiency and professionalism. A couple of things would have made the experience more pleasurable, table napkins, water on the table and a few crackers to go with the cheese would have been welcome, although I do 'get' that the cheese and wine pairing tasting is not enhanced with crackers! We will be back though as we love Balgownie, love supporting local business and the ambience is pared back and relaxed. A great place to take friends who come to stay with us for an afternoon glass of wine.

Welcoming entrance turning from the road into the winery. Very appealing setting with separate tables and gorgeous views out over the winery Layout of tables, ambience and service was wonderful. Wine selection of own label is great. Along with a selection of local wines was fantastic.

The service was erratic - sometimes good and sometimes non existent even though there weren’t that many customers. Food was incredibly overpriced - we paid $135 for a picnic platter and bottle of wine. There were 4 biscuits and 4 tiny pieces of bread on a moderate charcuterie platter. We spent over 40 min on a wine tasting and spent most of the time waiting on someone to attend. There was little dialogue re the wine. It’s a pity as their wines are very good.

Staff were very unorganised when we arrived, sending us from the restaurant, to the cellar door, back to the restaurant, and finally to the cellar door for lunch, even though we had an online booking that wasn't recorded. Then the only staff member in the cellar door didn't know there was a menu, telling us we could only have a cheese or charcuterie plate. We sorted that out after showing him the online menu. Charcuterie platter needed a relish, spread or dip, as it was quite bland. Not offered any further drinks after the 1st ones. Cars drove past on the driveway, spreading dust at diners eating on the outdoor deck. It would have been good to have some music, live or recorded. Thank goodness for nature providing the lovely scenery.

Thank you for your review. We are sorry if there seemed to be some communication issues regarding your booking I can clearly see you made one for the cellar door at 12pm and sat at approximately 1.15pm. I will pass your feedback about the platter to the kitchen as they must have omitted the relishes. The staff member was actually correct we only do a couple of platters on a Saturday & Sunday from the cellar door and have full lunch service from the restaurant. Days and times were on-line, but seem to have disappeared so I have asked our team to update the days and times available again. Cellar door is not really a full table service space, however guests can use the QR codes on the table and order drinks that can be delivered by the restaurant.
