Automata is Head Chef Clayton Well’s first solo restaurant, bringing a movable approach to a frequently changing five-course menu. Components stem from Clayton’s varied background at some of Australia and Europe’s dining institutions. Lovely lunch with interesting dishes and flavours. Not too flashy an atmosphere and a somewhat subdued service.

This was the second time I had been to Automata and I enjoyed it even more than the first time. The food was exceptional on both occasions, but I felt that the level of service was much improved this time (and was, in fact, impeccable). We also sat downstairs this time and although still a vibrant and busy space, it seemed quieter and I found it much easier to hear my dining companions (whereas upstairs had been too noisy to converse). This also made for a much better experience.

Imaginative food but unbelievably rude restaurant manager. The food is terrific but not worth dining there with such an awful woman at front of house. No wonder they called this restaurant Automata - she embodies the word! Sydney has a huge range of wonderful restaurants run by nicer people who serve up as good (or better) food. Look elsewhere. Automata delivers service that makes it hard to swallow even great food.

I am not taking away for one moment the exceptional dining experience gastronomically that myself and companions had, but I have to, have to say it was made even more enjoyable by the attentiveness & professionalism of the staff. How you are treated always will make or break a dining experience. Automata has fabulous staff on board. Cant say how many folks I have already recommended them to!
