We had been before and enjoyed the experience. However this time we were placed in a table in the lobby on the thoroufare for the toilets. If the table was second rate then the service was consistent, inattentive and slow. For £70 a head I expect better!

Extremely expensive afternoon tea, but you probably know the price before you go so the bill shouldn’t be any surprise. What was a surprise was the 10% they stick on the advertised prices. The ambience of the hotel is amazing. The staff are fantastic, cheerful, polite and attentive without being obtrusive. A credit to the hotel. The food is gorgeous, well filled sandwiches and lovely soft bread, amazing how much nicer it is when you’re used to Tesco loaves ! The sweet selection on the cake stand is all very tasty, we couldn’t finish all of them and the staff were happy to provide a nice little box to take home what we couldn’t manage ! All in all a very good , if pricey, experience.

A sign of the times! The costs keep going up but the quantity of food gets less!!

Absolutely brilliant experience. The building alone is beautiful as is the ambience. Took my daughter for her 40th birthday as a treat. She admits she would never have considered going to such a "grand" place as she thought it would be a bit "stuck up" with way she dressed (very casual). Instead we were treated exactly the same as other diners and not judged. The afternoon tea was exceptional in every respect and we'd highly recommend it. Staff were wonderful and attentive. This was my 2nd visit and plan to go again.

A beautifully done tea service in the dining room at the Merchant. The food was fresh and scones served hot with clotted cream and a house made jam. The patisserie was innovated and fun. They had a robust tea selection to support the unique menu. I would absolutely recommend this service to anyone who appreciates a nice afternoon tea.
