Across from Millennium park and along Chicago’s Cultural Mile, Acanto Restaurant + Wine Bar is a treasured destination for those who appreciate authentic and approachable Italian food in a conversation-friendly atmosphere. Acanto serves seasonally-driven Italian cuisine from both regions of Italy utilizing artisanal ingredients from Midwest farmers and producers. Acanto boasts one of the most lauded wine programs in the US, including a 3-star rating by World of Fine Wine and a two-glass “Best of Excellence” rating by Wine Spectator. The libations menu is rounded out by Italian classics including spritzes and negronis along with craft cocktails, beer, and spirits.

The word Acanto is the Italian translation of Acanthus, the flowery leaf featured prominently in Roman architecture. Famed architect Louis Sullivan used Acanthus in his distinctive terra cotta ornamentation found on the facade of the historically-landmarked building that houses Acanto.

The food and service are always wonderful here. This beautiful restaurant is located across from Millennium Park and close by Symphony Hall. The appetizers change seasonally and are always interesting. For the main course, I had the fusilli pasta with lobster and my husband had the gnocchi dish, and both were excellent. The wine list features, among others, a large selection of Italian wines — we had a delightful sparkling Vermentino. The dessert menu was quite unique and offered at least six different selections. We ordered a superb panna cotta. We’ve been dining at Acanto for many years ago and we will return soon.

We had lunch at Acanto during Chicago Restaurant Week. A great menu. I had the lobster ravioli, sauteed/roasted scallops and a meringue dessert. My friend had the arugula salad and the rigatoni Bolognese, and the chocolate dessert. We tasted each other's food and agreed that each dish was a winner. Service was great. Highly recommend.

I was extremely disappointed with our experience last night. I asked for a recommendation and chose this restaurant from a long list. The evening began by another party sitting at the table that my name was assigned to. The hostess quickly accommodated and found us a table which was nice of her but the table was not as nice as it was longer and difficult to hear each other. Our waiter was the bartender who did not have time to do both roles which resulted in very poor service overall. I was embarrassed as I got our group together for this dinner and was excited for a nice evening. I ordered a drink for a colleague and said she’d be there in 10 min which she was. Once she arrived I had to remind him three times to please make her drink! Once we did finally get to order and our food began to come out, the baby kale salads were delicious! Unfortunately not a single person was happy with their meal. Mine was cold and I had ordered scallops and broccolini. I got only scallops and when I inquired about the broccolini he said they were out and then offered cauliflower. A colleague had a pasta dish and the pasta was chewy. Another had meatballs which tasted so bitter she couldn’t eat them. The bread was good once it came but we had to ask four times.

Everything was great! A little too long for the entrees to appear due to a problem in the kitchen. Nothing major.
