Il Violino was established in 1993 by the Mariani family. They are from Villa Santa Maria, a little town in the heart of Italy (Abruzzo) known as La patria dei cuochi (chefs from this town have been executives at the Vatican, the White House, embassies and top restaurants and cruise lines around the world). Il Violino has been one of the original Lincoln Center Italian restaurants and, in these days, one of the few still in operation. The chef Vincenzo Mariani, formerly the executive chef at Monsignore (one of the top restaurant in New York City in the 70’s and 80’s), leaded the kitchen with his international experience and created an original and innovative Italian menu. In 2009 the owner, decided to write a new page. The restaurant has been transformed into a Trattoria: a warmer and cozier ambiance, one of those that you can easily find in any small town in Italy.

I was so excited to return to the Leopard after many years. It didn’t disappoint! From the moment we walked in to the tasteful, cozy dining room we were greeted with care. Even though we were early we were seated at a nice table. It gave us time to review the menus. When service began, our fantastic waitress Gabriella, even gave me a taste of a wine I had asked about before I decided to order it. My husband and I chose the restaurant week menu. I was a bit apprehensive but we went with it. What a good decision! Their fabulous sourdough bread paired with some amazing olive oil was a great start. The tomato soup amuse bouche was excellent and it continued like that throughout the meal. The two of us shared everything and not only were we full, we were absolutely stuffed with good, fresh, tasty food! And of course you’re dining surrounded by amazing murals of beautiful nudes! Bravo to this team! These days most restaurants have raised prices but gone downhill. Not the Gatopardo!

Compared to other restaurants in the area, many of which have excellent food, Lincoln Ristorante stands out for its more pleasant ambience as well as its excellent cuisine. The tables aren't crowded together, the staff is uniformly helpful and friendly, the noise level is moderate, and all this goes with excellent food and wine, which is why we eat here whenever we attend a performance at Lincoln Center.
