It’s not surprising that the oldest structure in Reading was originally a tavern. Many others have sprung up around town since 1694, and they’re dishing up some of the best clam chowder, shepherd’s pie and baked beans in all of New England. With the Atlantic Ocean just a stone’s throw away, seafood from fish-and-chips to beer-steamed clams is as fresh as it comes. The great lobster roll debate – hot with melted butter or cold with mayo, lemon and herbs – rages on. You could settle it once and for all by trying both. Sample a traditional Irish corned beef hash, an escolar tataki sushi roll or homemade tortellini with mascarpone sauce. Immigration from around the globe is reflected in the delicious diversity of Reading’s cuisine. For dessert, Irish coffee and Boston cream pie are a match made in heaven.
