Consisting of the area of Westeliljke Eilanden (the “Western Islands”) plus surrounding districts, this area has a storied past. Until the end of the 19th century, there were many wharfs and the area was frequented by artists, who established homes and studios in the vacant buildings. More recently, these warehouses have been transformed into apartments and cafes, but you can still see the bygone era with the wooden drawbridges and old buildings. For a mix of old and new, try classic burgers, while also saving room for Tibetan cuisine. Traditional Thai is always popular, as are cozy cafes with salads, sandwiches, and other familiar treats.
