The Knife & Fork was originally established in 1912 as an exclusive men's drinking and dining club. The second floor was graced a "ladies lounge", where women, who were not permitted at the bar, waited to be summoned. Private rooms on the 3rd and 4th floors were used for gambling and, perhaps, other activities.

During Prohibition, rebellious club members defied the laws of an alcohol-free society and continued to openly serve liquor. The club survived without being raided for some time, perhaps due to the influence of Enoch 'Nucky' Johnson, the reigning political boss, who was a Knife & Fork regular.

The 2005 renovation of this legendary restaurant was designed to recapture the look and feel of the Knife & Fork's Prohibition era roots. The menu, featuring the finest steaks and seafood, is complemented by an extensive wine list and 10,000 bottle wine "cellar".

NOTE: We are a multi-level house with no elevator. Please make us aware if you prefer first floor accommodations.

Since this is more of a special occasion venue, go for the lobster thermidor. It’s a 2-1/4 lb. monster with the meat cooked, cut up, and put back in the shell with a creamy sauce and some veggies. You will savor every bite. Service is great too.

Our group had several different dishes with much variety and, we shared. Everything was great to over the top, best ever. All was perfect... the only thing I could not comment on with a perfect score is the fact that some of the staff did not seem happy. They were OK to nice with us but to see them behind the bar or back in the kitchen, they did not look excited to be there. Regardless, everything was wonderful and we'll be back.

My recommendation of Knife and Fork is a yes*. The asterisk stems from the lack of consistency in the atmosphere. It is a fine dining experience, and the food is always good, but there are higher expectations for service. My favorite experience of dining out ever was at Knife and Fork, but I have also left disappointed, as in this weekend. It can be incredibly loud, as it was this weekend, and that detracts from the experience but it happens. What I can't excuse is the average service we received. We didn't learn the waitress's name, there was no banter, no information about the food, and long waits. She just had no personality. While the food prices, especially at Restaurant Week, are no longer much (if at all) higher than Philly or New York, there still used to be the feeling that this is the place for a special night out, and the last two times the service has not been special at all.

Last place we ate out before everything closed down due to Covid. Dinner was excellent and glad we had a great time before the lockdown!
