A legendary hangout in North Beach since it opened in 1919, and even more so from the 1980's onward when Jeanette Etheredge took over Tosca. Locals including Willie Brown, Lars Ulrich and Francis Ford Coppola were regular fixtures, Hunter S Thompson wrote his column for the SF Examiner in the corner booth, Bono, Lauren Hutton, and Mikhail Baryshnikov played pool in the back room, singing Opera and drinking Tosca House Cappuccinos. When Restaurateur Anna Weinberg and Interior Designer Ken Fulk heard Tosca Cafe was closing they joined forces to save it. As the new owners and passionate fans of the original establishment their goal was to return Tosca to its rightful place as a San Francisco institution. As Mikey Rapin wrote in Bon Appétit magazine: “It’s the kind of joint Beats got bounced, Bono belted opera, and a bullet hole memoralizes the night an A-LIST actor disagreed with a rockstar's choice of music"

An exceptionally stylish supper club, civilized speakeasy, a sophisticated saloon. Each of these "personae" is housed in a soaring two-story interior distinguished by a gently curving mahogany bar, fluted columns with ornate capitals, stunning original art, plush banquettes, cozy booths, starched linens, glittering glasses, and polished flatware. Overall, the ambiance is pure 1930's and 1940's - tasteful art moderne reminiscent of the glory days of Cunard and French Line ships. Fashionable and glamorous are the hallmarks. Trendy is simply not a part of the BIX culture. The clientele at BIX ranges from San Francisco movers-and-shakers to "savvy travelers" - owner Doug Biederbeck's term for the many diners in the know from out of town who patronize his establishment. All of them step from the featureless alley into another world - a world of superb cookery and libations, of sparkling service, of stylish nostalgia, of polished live jazz. That world is BIX.

First time. Great experience, excellent customer service from the moment we walked in. Food was excellent. Ambience was very nice, lighting was soft, beautiful interior, and the music in the background was very nice. Overall noise level a bit loud, but still, what a great setting for a couples/date night setting. Not inexpensive if that's a factor. We will definitely be going back!

Holiday tea is always a family favorite! The tea sandwiches and desserts were not great this year! All of them were dry and flavorless! Tea was good! Service great!

What a wonderful restaurant, live music with a singer, and a table for 5 just close enough. Several stations, as it was Thanksgiving. Salads, pastas, great veggies and excellent turkey, roast beef and porchetta. Delicious desserts. And wonderful wines, all included. Excellent and attentive service from all staff, a great start to the Holidays. Enjoy!

I've always love the food at Tosca, and have been coming here for over a decade. I was more impressed than usual last night with the service. We were a table of 9 people and felt like we were being taken care of by friends who anticipated what we needed. Can't wait to return.

Wow. We had a wonderful time at the Red Window. We had been anticipating going for a few months. We had booked a table to celebrate 2 belated birthdays in August for October. Little did we know that they changed their hours of opening for October. I called and reconfirmed the date and time with them and they said they would open for us as planned. We were treated like queens. We had a lovely server name Melanie. She served us our fantastic rojo sangria and let us know all the popular tapas and entrees as well as her favorites. One of the birthday girls is a food and wine blogger so she picked Melanie brain on the drinks and food being served. We ordered food we could all share. Caesar salad, Arugula Salad,Buffalo chicken wings, and Chili Braised Lamb pasta. Everything was delicious and very filling. They comp us 4 glasses of champagne to celebrate our 2 ladies birthday. What a memorable day. Melanie from Lucca made it so special for us too. The ambiance of the Red Window is colorful and festive and the lively music they played gave it a party atmosphere. We will all go back again. Thanks to the owner for honoring our reservations. You made us very happy!!
