You’ll need to be in on a few secrets to visit Coal & Cedar. This hidden speakeasy has no signage and no doorbell. Instead, you’ll need to text a special code to a number on the wall and a host will open the door and usher you inside. Rest assured, it’s worth the effort, having just won Best Regional bar in Australia 2016.Once inside, you’ll discover a moody, eclectic cocktail bar with an urban edge. Holding fewer than 60 guests, it’s this old world ambience that sets Coal & Cedar apart from Newcastle’s bar scene.Ethan and Ryan are the team behind the venture. Foghorn Brewery was born of a dream to make craft beer the way it ought to be made—from grain to glass all under one roof.The historic building in King Street had been abandoned for several years when we first set foot inside. In that dusty old warehouse, we saw the potential to create something really special.And so it was that Newcastle’s first modern craft brewery opened its doors in April 2015. The town’s industrial roots have played a big part in shaping the unique character of Foghorn Brewery. Built from the ground up, this art deco era warehouse with exposed roof trusses now houses a custom 1800 litre brewery.

    Thanks for accommodating our booking of 10 people on Saturday evening. Staff were friendly nd the food was delightful. We did book for 6PM however a few of our party got held up and didn't arrive until after 6:30pm, so things were a bit rushed toward the end as another group was coming in after us. Drink service was a little slow but they did seem quite busy with diners and take away orders. I will be back to try some more of the menu :)

    The place was packed but our table was clean and ready at the booked time. Excellent service and the beers tasted great. The 8 Things food truck provided a great selection of German food for the Oktoberfest event. We'll done Method Brewing on being such a professionally run venue.
